Somebody wrote in to Writers Weekly to ask what happens to unpaid contributors when their stories are published in a celebrity's book, like, say, Tim Russert's Tell Me Why Your Dad is Awesome book. In situations such as that, you won't get terribly much except the ability to say that you had a piece published in Tim Russert's My Dad is Awesome book. It might be a good opportunity for very new writers but if possible, why not get a standalone byline and some cash for your writing? Plus, an actual published clip is a lot more credible to an editor looking for freelancers than a note saying "I published an anecdote about my dad in Tim Russert's latest book."
