Pitching an Agent: The Graybill & English Literary Agency

agencypox.jpgToday Jill Singer interviews Jeff Kleinman of the DC-based Graybill & English Literary Agency, who represents Ron McLarty (The Memory of Running), sports columnist and Charles Barkley co-author Michael Wilbon (Who’s Afraid of a Large Black Man, I May Be Wrong But I Doubt It),and former army sergeant Erik Saar (Inside the Wire)plus they co-represent one of my favorites, Laurie Notaro (The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club, Autobiography of a Fat Bride.) Kleinman is a non-practicing lawyer, and this expertise gets passed on to the client when it comes to negotiation and contracts. What to pitch? A lot of stuff. Here’s what NOT to pitch: Graybill is not interested in “practical, prescriptive nonfiction, children’s, young adult, highly commercial or genre fiction, screenplays and poetry.” English won’t touch science fiction and fantasy. You’ll have to read the article to find out more.
