Because you and I know it, we're just terrible with this sort of stuff.
Should a freelancer pay someone else to do their taxes or should they use tax software? What's the difference?
Using software, you are in full control of your taxes. Personally, I never have and never will hire someone else to do my taxes because I want to be in control. I also take the time to make sure I'm following the rules.
On the other hand, using an accountant should be like using a consultant. Their real skill is helping you plan ahead, stay organized, stay out of trouble and take advantage of tax breaks you might not have thought of. Because of this, I say find a tax accountant you can trust and build a relationship with. This person might be at a retail chain, or in a mom-and-pop office, or on their own. It's not about the brand, it's about the person. You really want someone who understands, I mean really understands, that freelancing is a real business.
