House and Garden: The editor there hates the word "hydrangea." Don't use it.

Esquire: I worked with editor so-and-so and he got irate when I turned in a piece written in Times New Roman. Only use Courier New!!

When you write for the New York Times, they really prefer it if you use accurate quotes and real sources.

I freelanced for Dog Fancy and found out they hate it when you use the word "pooch" instead of 'dog' or whatever.
