Gannett Reports Smaller Fourth Quarter Profit

Gannett Co, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, reported fourth quarter results Monday that delivered on Wall Street’s expectations but still showed a marked decline in advertising revenues.

The company’s total revenues for the quarter were $1.39 billion, down from $1.46 billion the year before, while net income was $116.9 million, down 32 percent from $174 million the year prior. Also, the company spent $40 million after tax on severance and other “workforce restructuring” initiatives, one reason why the company’s profits fell so dramatically.

Ad revenues at the company’s newspapers fell an average of 7 percent, while revenues at Gannett’s TV stations fell 13 percent, mostly due to a lack of political advertising.

Digital revenues, though, rose 9 percent, mostly due to growth at CareerBuilder. Digital now makes up 21 percent of Gannett’s revenues.

PiPress Workers Get Two Layoff-Free Months

Employees at the St. Paul Pioneer Press have extended a shortened workweek in exchange for a no-layoff guarantee through March 31, averting possible layoffs, MinnPost reports.

Two years ago, the paper was the only MediaNews-owned property that was losing money, and management instituted the shortened workweek and pay reductions in exchange for a yearlong no-layoff guarantee. That guarantee has since been extended a few times, saving about 30 union jobs (though non-union managers have been let go during this time). The paper is now owned by John Paton’s DigitalFirst, the company possibly trying the hardest to transform newspapers into profitable online news organizations.

Organize Your Job Search With 44Score

There’s a new job search tool out there. It’s inexpensive, it’s easy, and it may actually help a lot of jobseekers out there.

It’s called 44score, and we’ve been testing it out over the last few weeks. (Unsurprising disclaimer: 44score founder David Sickmiller let us test it for free in the hopes that we would review it.)

44Score is a sort of CRM tool for jobseekers. It tracks where you’ve applied, remembers what version of your resume and cover letter you sent where, and reminds you to follow up.

So far, no big deal. Becomed, for example, does the same stuff, and even anyone who doesn’t want to use a CRM can set up reminders, etc., with any decent task management software.

Where 44Score stands out is its toolbar, which installs right in your browser and takes care of automating much of the data entry that goes along with tracking your job search. (The toolbar only works, of course, with browsers that support this sort of thing–so Firefox 4+ or Internet Explorer 7 or higher. Sorry, Chrome users.)

When you click on an email address to apply for a job, a window pops up right in your browser. It has saved copies of other cover letters you’ve sent out, so you can reuse (and customize, of course) said letter and pick the best version of your resume for that job. After the email is sent, you can tell the software to remind you to follow up in a week.

The toolbar also reminds you when a deadline for applying or following up is coming due.

The software isn’t perfect. We wish the user interface was a little cleaner (or required fewer clicks); it doesn’t work with all jobs you apply for through an ATS (though the toolbar does support some ATSes, and you can manually add that application history on 44Score’s homepage); and until recently, there was no way to prevent the toolbar from making *every* email address you clicked on open the toolbar. (44Score has recently added an “eject” button that kicks you back into your preferred mail program). We also wish that 44score had analytics like some of its competitors.

Jobseekers pay nothing to sign up and begin using the service. Once you land a job, you pay a “placement fee” to 44Score, which ranges from $4.95 to $39.95 depending on what type of job it is (internships are cheapest, while full-time salaried positions are the most expensive).

If you use this to get a job, let us know. We liked the trial but obviously didn’t follow it through to its conclusion, since we’re not seeking a new gig right now.

Hard To Argue With Twitter’s New Recruiting Video

The above recruiting video for Twitter is bad. Purposely bad, of course, but it’s still cringe-inducing. Hey, nobody wants to work at a company that takes itself too seriously to make a video this bad, right?

Most of the social network’s open positions are for engineering jobs, as you’d imagine, but we found a few for media pros, like this one for a copywriter/editorial manager.

With Wine Romance ‘Spent,’ QRW Ceases Publication

The Quarterly Review of Wines, a 35-year-old wine bible, ceased publication at the end of last year, a move that went unnoticed by the press until now, minonline reports.

Why? Well, the usual, said publisher Richard Elia recently: “upcoming retirements, the magazine world is in perilous shape, advertising is down, the digital age is king, out-of-state wine delivery problems.”

That, and the romance is just gone, he says. Since people are more concerned with toys and being able to quickly look up a wine’s score on their cell phones, it just isn’t fun anymore.

Tell that to the magazine’s 25 contributors, though, and they’ll probably say they wished the magazine had stuck around, “romance” or not.

Dan Abrams Food Site Will Need ‘A Couple’ New Hires

Among the other topics covered in this wide-ranging interview with the Mediaite founder, Dan Abrams told Ad Age today that he’s launching a food site “in the next few months.”

The site will use one in-house editor but Abrams Media will be hiring “a couple more” people to help run the site.

That, plus one or two more launches later in 2012, mean a few gigs for journalists/bloggers/what have you. And Abrams also told Ad Age that the company is “solidly profitable,” which is always a good sign on the Internet.
