Loafers Enjoy Their Jobs More Than High & Middle Performers, New Study Says

When we read about this study, it made us wonder what the incentive is to work so darn hard since low performers experience less stress and less work.

Kidding, of course!

After you hear about this study, you should still feel inspired to be diligent, committed and passionate about your work. As in completely engaged… continued…

Three Ways to Adjust From a Full-Time Job Into Freelancing

Okay, to piggy back our post yesterday about adjusting from freelancing to a full-time gig, we need to bookend it with it with the opposite situation. Adjustment takes time and planning but with some preparation, you’ll be well equipped to make the transition. Here’s how to do it…

1. Create structure. After the novelty of waking up until noon and creating your own hours wears off, you’ll want to create a schedule in terms of when you’ll wake up, when you’ll start working and most importantly, when you’ll stop. Creating set hours may seem counterintuitive to freelancing but if you don’t, work bleeds into life and bank into work and it can get kind of gray.

Translation: You may find yourself working harder than ever before now that it’s for yourself. And with that hard work may come midnight pitches, deliverables, invoicing, etc.

Furthermore, where will you work? Will it be your home office? The local coffee shop? The library? All of the above depending on the day? These are all things to consider.

2. Seek out fellow freelancers. Yes, as a freelancer you’re on your own with wings to soar but you may find yourself very isolated. Whether you work from home or not, fact of the matter is you’re probably working alone. Without anyone to bounce ideas off or even have water cooler chatter (and how many times has an innocent conversation led to a story idea or blog post?), you may find yourself isolated.

Seek volunteer opportunities, social activities and above all, opportunities to connect with local freelancers. Even if a friend is now freelancing, too why not create set times to meet at a local coffee shop to work in specific increments by setting an alarm on your mobile phone, and then taking a break to chat?

3. Own your finances. Okay, this has less to do about the physical and mental sides of freelancing but is important nonetheless. Without an employer to provide benefits and the ubiquitous paycheck, you’re now fully on your own.

It may be well worth your time and money to sit down with a financial planner to determine how much money you can set aside every month for retirement, if you should contribute to a Roth IRA and all sorts of fun topics. Although some people dread the finance aspect of it all, why not embrace it? The sooner you figure this part out, the better off you’ll be.

New Survey Reveals Employees May Be More Honest in Light Rooms Than Dark Ones

Let there be light! With light, according to a new study, comes honesty.

As for the back story, researchers from the University of Virginia and College of William and Mary investigated how daylight saving time impacts crime rates. Results revealed daylight saving decreased robbery by a staggering 51 percent! Rape decreased by 56 percent and murder by 43 percent. Researchers argued that more lighting increases the likelihood of witnesses identifying criminals.

To take things one step further, Francesca Gino, associate professor of business administration at Harvard University, and her colleagues studied how lighting conditions would impact honesty within organizations. continued…

Three Ways to Adjust from Freelancing to a Full-Time Day Job

Ah, the joys and perils of freelancing. On one hand, you have creative freedom and can make your own hours, sleep until noon if you want and work out of coffee shops.

On the other hand, the line between work and play is often blurred when you work around the clock, work with current clients and simultaneously market yourself to potential new ones, follow up with invoices, and burn the midnight oil at times.

Sure, there are pluses and minuses but if you decide to leap from the freelance world into a full-time day job, there are a few major adjustments in store for you. Here’s how to handle them… continued…

Three Ways to Retool Your Networking Mojo

Okay, you know the drill. You’re at a cocktail party and strike up a conversation with someone standing next to you at the cheese and veggies table. You exchange cards, follow up via email to grab a cup of coffee and bam! It goes nowhere.

It may be time to rethink your networking prowess into a one-two punch. Here’s how to do it…

1. Be strategic and figure out who to stalk (um, we meant meet). Go into an event — whether it’s a panel with industry leaders or a cocktail party for the media, for instance — with a plan. Who do you want to meet? Looking to connect with fellow graphic designers? Or maybe you need to connect with editors? Book agents? Sometimes you may not even know who you want to meet and therein lies the quandary. continued…

How to Handle Illegal Interview Questions

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, CareerOneStop is essentially a new Web site. It’s a virtual business center aimed at “hiring, training and retaining a strong workforce.”

The site looks like it’s geared toward hiring managers but we discovered their list of illegal interview questions and figured it’s worth noting.

While hiring managers need to be schooled on what’s appropriate, job seekers (especially those new to the game such as college grads) also need to know what they simply don’t need to answer. And sometimes it may be a bit unclear. For instance, employers are not allowed to ask if you are a U.S. citizen but they may inquire if you are authorized to work in the U.S. continued…

Media Beat Rewind With Marissa Mayer: Learn By Failing

Before she became the CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer sat down with Media Beat when she was Google’s VP of consumer products. “I am a geek,” she said. Hear her decision making process over the 14 job offers she received in 1999!

As for advice on deciding where to work and the difference between working for a small or large company, she relied this question: “What ultimately do you want to learn?” Are decisions made when you’re in the room? Find out more!

Four Ways to Stay Healthy at the Office This Spring

Not too long ago we wrote about New Year’s resolutions and it’s hard to believe April is almost upon us, isn’t it?

Well, it may be time to dust off those notes and reacquaint ourselves with the idea of getting and staying healthy at the office especially with warmer temps on the rise.

1. Get moving! Get your juices flowing, get away from your desk. Even if this involves putting on a pair of sneakers to walk around your office lobby during lunch time (assuming of course, it’s a large lobby), it’s all good. Save errands for your lunch hour and as an excuse (sad we need to create a reason to tear away from the desk) and commit to doing them. You’ll get fresh air, you’ll stimulate your mind and of course, your body. continued…

How to Handle a Slacker Co-Worker

Ah, we know it all too well. You’re busting your hump over the midnight oil to meet a looming deadline while your co-worker is nowhere to be found.

Not only are you doing your share and his share of work, your colleagues are picking up his slack as well.

So, how are you going to handle it? First, says Annie Fisher in her column, “Ask Annie,” on Fortune, your dilemma is “far from unique.” Although it’s a hot topic and frequently occurs in the workplace, it’s rare for people to confront the culprit.

Sometimes you may just grin and bear it — the idea of confronting a co-worker you still have to see on a daily basis may seem more daunting than the work itself. Buyer beware, however: This could lead to a build up of emotions and frustrations to really blow your stack. continued…

Salary.com just released their results to their annual survey, Wasting Time at Work. The numbers tell all: About 69 percent of the 1,000 employees in the survey indicated they have indeed wasted time at work. This is up from 64 percent last year.

Approximately one-third of respondents revealed they waste 30 minutes or less each day whereas almost one-quarter indicated they waste between 30 and 60 minutes each day. About 11 percent claimed they waste a few hours of non-work things each day. Scary stat, huh?

Lastly, about 10 percent ‘fessed they never waste time during the day. Really? continued…

NCAA.com’s Boss Button Disguised as In-Box

The NCAA knows a thing or two about their tournament and how avid fans and the happily employed stay abreast of the games during office hours.

As such, there’s the convenient boss button which was apparently spawned in 2006!

So, if you hear footsteps of your boss down the hall and want to look like you’re working instead of checking out how your brackets are doing, the nifty button takes you back to the main page of March Madness. continued…

Amazing. That word has a lot of weight, doesn’t it? Outstanding. Incredible. Out of this world!

Well, if you want to hit the ball out of the park each and every day, there are a few ways you, too can be oh-so-amazing.

According to a post on Inc., there are several things you can do. And it’s not just to get promoted or with an end goal in sight of a fatter pay check. Instead, you should strive for this level of excellence while detaching from the outcome. The results may be even far reaching than you would have imagined in the first place. continued…

Have you ever submitted your resume online only to never hear from the company? Or maybe you’ve been interviewing and haven’t heard about the status of your candidacy.

According to a CareerBuilder survey, approximately 75 percent of jobseekers who applied to jobs last year using a variety of sources didn’t end up hearing from the potential employer. continued…
