Media PeopleAt Vogue, Danko Steiner Resigns, Raul Martinez Filling The Spot
Martinez will continue with his agency while working with Vogue, where his duties will include "work[ing] with the magazine and vogue.com's art, design and photography and offer[ing] input on Vogue's overall image and brand." (More on Steiner: Danko Steiner Named Vogue Design Director: UnBeige) F*** It, I Forgive YouHey, when you're new to the working world, you can get real nervous. We know. Candidates on their first job interview out of college, or at their first job, don't always know how to behave. Sometimes that translates to nervousness. I was recruiting for a large company, [writes Kerry Sandberg Scott at Clue Wagon] and they had a very defined recruiting process, which included a list of behavior-based questions I was supposed to ask each candidate. She had been doing great so far, and the interview was going well. Apparently I'd been a little too successful in making her comfortable and building rapport, thought, because when I asked the last question ("Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a co-worker") she laughed and said: Kerry, we appreciate what you did next: "I decided to leave this out of my interview notes. This was a 21-year-old who had very little experience in job interviews...She turned out to be an excellent employee." Since it's Friday, we're drawing a parallel to Jenny Slate and her slip-up on SNL (not work safe thanks to the f-bomb): We're trying to resist drawing morals from this, but here's one minor lesson: when you're starting out, go on as many interviews as you are asked to do, even if you're not sure you want the job. For one thing, it'll help with the nervousness thing; for another, the job may turn out to be something way more awesome than it was described to you. Gannett, LexisNexis CEOs Among Most Hated In America
But if you think that's bad, be glad you're not LexisNexis CEO Andy Prozes, who's currently running an 8 percent approval rating with his employees. Apparently a great guy to be at the top of your food chain is General Mills' Ken Powell. 96 percent of employees love the guy. Good god, nation, we bet y'all were uber-productive when the world's greatest timesink disappeared for, oh, three and a half hours. What did we do? We decided to see what you guys had been saying about jobs before the service froze. With that in mind, we'd like to debut what we hope will become a semi-regular feature: a pretty visualization of what y'all have been Tweeting about. ![]() wordle.net A few notes: These are tweets come from @mediajobsdaily followers and are filtered by keyword, for things like "job" "employment" etc. But this tag cloud is IN NO WAY scientific, so please don't jump to any conclusions. (Folio:) 'If You Want to be an Artist, You're Going to Have to Live Like One'We've been following some of our readers' blogs ever since we asked for y'all to send us links back in July (and please, send more!). Today we happened upon reader Crystal of Brunette On A Budget and her confession that she actually doesn't like living on a budget. Hey, who of us actually does? But after quitting her corporate job to become an author, a budget is rather necessary. We found her husband's "voice of reason" to be pretty dang near universal: "You know, it's a trade-off. Would you rather be doing what you did before and shopping all the time, or working on your book and not spending much money?...If you want to be an artist, you're going to have to live like one." I've never had to live the life of an artist, so I didn't know what to expect. And even though I loathe living on a budget, I'll do so because while it may seem that I'm irate now, I was even more exasperated before with my other career and all the money I had. Go figure. So. First: Go Crystal, right? Second: We're totally on the hunt for more of your blogs, so feel free to leave a comment and a brief summary. Joe Skeel Named Executive Director Of SPJ
Skeel was the editor of Quill, SPJ's magazine, from 2004 to 2008, when he was named associate executive director. SPJ President Smith said Skeel will have a "much needed stabilizing effect on its national headquarters after several years of difficulties surrounding Harper's illness." (via) Entrepreneurship Is In Your BloodAnd your bones, your skin, your organs... Scott A. Shane, professor of entrepreneurial studies at Case Western, says that it's possible that successful entrepreneurs have different DNA. They're currently conducting a genome study to pinpoint what specific genes, if any, contribute to entrepreneurship, but other studies have already hinted at the connection. He writes in the NYT's You're The Boss blog: The tendency to be an entrepreneur is heritable. (Heritability is the proportion of difference between individuals explained by genetic factors.) We found these heritabilities were substantive regardless of what indications of entrepreneurship we measured: owning or operating a business, the number of businesses owned and operated, starting a business, the number of businesses started, having engaged in a start-up effort, the number of start-up efforts, being self-employed, or the number of years spent self-employed. The heritabilities can be seen in analysis of multiple databases and can be seen in the research of other scholars as well as our own. In addition, the tendency to identify new business opportunities is heritable, self-employment is heritable (meaning that genetics affects not just the tendency to want to be an entrepreneur but the ability to succeed at at) and certain personality traits (extraversion, openness, etc) seem to be genetically related to entrepreneurship. This could mean that the "entrepreneurship gene" is really just a "certain type of personality gene" which sounds like common sense, really. On the other hand, personality is just the foundationyou can't become a world-class pianist just by being born with long fingers. You need practice, and stubby-fingered folk can become great pianists even at a physical/genetic disadvantage. Discovery CEO Gets 50% RaiseWe've probably said this before, but who says there's no money in media? Discovery Communications (NSDQ: DISCA) CEO David Zaslav just got a 50% raise to $3 million yearly and could get another $55 million in five years if he doesn't quit and meets his performance targets. That's reported by paidContent.org which notes that since joining Discovery from NBC Universal in 2007, the company's been incredibly pleased with his workcutting costs, adding programming, increasing sales, and partnering with Oprah Winfrey.
