You know how most of the time we mention results from research studies that totally make sense?
This is not one of those times.
According to new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, people who use their network connections actually find jobs “at a slower rate than the average job seeker. The most effective way is to directly contact potential employers.”
Taking a look at the stats, from 1976 until 2011, 65.7 percent of unemployed job seekers had contacted employers directly compared to 17.5 percent who contacted friends and relatives. People reportedly also placed or answered ads, contacted public employment agencies and used private employment agencies but for the purpose of this post we’re focusing on direct contact with employers and the family and friends’ network.
They concluded the direct contact to an employer was the most effective method. We should add the researchers indicate data also speaks to long-term unemployment. The longer a job seeker is unemployed, the less likely they are to get back on their own two feet in a full-time opportunity.
And the longer they’re unemployed, the less it mattered which job search method they used. Hmmm.
