Survey: Financial Journalists Make About $65K

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers has a new survey out that shows that the average business journalists in the U.S. makes between $65,000 and $70,000 a year.

The numbers come from a confidential online survey, which received 394 responses. More than 46 percent of the respondees were from journalists in their first or second financial journalism job while 20 percent of the responses came from those in their fourth or more job. Of the respondents, business reporters had a median salary between $60,000 and $65,000 a year.

Section editors made about $75,000 to $80,000 a year while editors at print publications reached near $100,000 per year.

Surprisingly, the field is still attracting a good amount of young talent. Nearly 60 percent of the responders have been in the field for less than five years. Although, that could have had something to do with the fact the survey was conducted online.

Wire service reporters made more than magazine and Web reporters, on average, according to the survey.

Still these salaries beat many of the industry-wide average salaries that I saw.
