Indeed.com Says Tuesday is the Biggest Night for Job Seekers on Mobile Devices

We have a heavy heart here on Tuesday morning, the day after the horrific attack in Boston.

Sadly, tragedy always manages to put things in perspective so in comparison to the fragility of life, the job hunt doesn’t seem so heavy or monumental.

This just in from Indeed.com….apparently new data shows that job seekers use their mobile devices to find work on Tuesday nights more than any other time of the week.

The Web site’s mobile traffic has more than doubled over the past year; in fact, its mobile searches account for about one-third of all users.

It looks like there’s a disconnect since many employers have sites which are easy to navigate by mobile visitors but the sites are not user-friendly to actually apply via the mobile device.

Although the press release pointed toward employers ensuring their sites have capability for mobile users, we found the evening factor interesting since that’s when job searching spikes with mobile users, especially on Tuesdays. That is all for now. Carry on…

Haven’t Heard Back From an Employer? You’re Among 75 Percent of Jobseekers

Have you ever submitted your resume online only to never hear from the company? Or maybe you’ve been interviewing and haven’t heard about the status of your candidacy.

According to a CareerBuilder survey, approximately 75 percent of jobseekers who applied to jobs last year using a variety of sources didn’t end up hearing from the potential employer. continued…

How to Read Between the Lines of a Job Posting

Job seekers should always have their detective hats on: You never know what valuable insights you may glean from a job posting. Scrutinizing the language typically used on job boards can also offer useful information that will help you land and ace an interview. In the latest Mediabistro feature, job experts help you decipher and take advantage of the hidden signs. Check out an excerpt:

What Does “Other Duties as Assigned” Mean?

“Ending job posts with the line ‘other duties as assigned’ often means that the hiring manager doesn’t know exactly what he wants,” said Vance Crowe, CEO of Articulate Ventures, a St. Louis-based communications firm. “But these should be signals to job seekers that management will value your willingness to do the less desirable work.”

So, how do you sell yourself if the hiring manager is flexible about the duties? Get all the advice in How to Read Between the Lines of a Job Posting. [Mediabistro AvantGuild subscription required]

Four Ways to Spring Clean Your Career

Okay, we know it may be kind of trite but what could be more metaphorical than spring cleaning your career than the arrival of spring this week?

1. Revamp that resume. Even if you’re not job hunting, few things can be as powerful as powering up your CV.

That is, make it ready for circulation even if you’re not looking. It’s your ticket to the next step in your career so even if you don’t send it out right away to a few contacts, might as well dust it off, update it to your current job and make a few tweaks. continued…

Three Ways to Bounce Back from Rejection

We know it all too well. You apply to a job online and think you’re a slam dunk candidate as in a no brainer to interview.

Lo and behold, a few days later you receive a form letter e-mail indicating the company will not be interviewing you. What gives? Here at MediaJobsDaily we like to chalk it up to the “it’s not me, it’s you” approach.

As in, anything could be going on internally. It could have been filled by an internal candidate, the hiring manager could have changed his or her hiring needs, the job could be put on hold soon unbeknownst to you, the boss’ boss’ nephew could have slid in the door. Anything could have happened so please don’t take it personally.

That said, when you’re pounding the pavement and hitting slammed door after slammed door, sometimes it’s hard not to move on. (And if you’re interviewing and getting close to a job offer several times and still haven’t gotten the coveted jobs, well in that case you don’t want to be remiss in looking at your interview style and realizing hey, it is you! But that’s a whole other blog post coming soon.)

According to Dr. Lynn Joseph, columnist at The Washington Post, there are a few things you can do to bounce back from initial rejection. continued…

Four Ways to Infuse Life Back Into Your Job Search

Feeling stalled? Got the winter blues? A bit down and out? All of the above? You’re not alone.

Considering job hunting doesn’t happen quickly and it’s a marathon, not a sprint, there are a few ways to keep your eye on the prize.

1. Celebrate mini victories. In job searching, interviewing, negotiating and closing your own deal, we need all the patience we can get. It takes time as well as persistence and in the end the only real tangible thing to hold onto is the job offer. So, how can you hold onto sticktuitiveness for the end goal when that’s the only thing that may seem to matter and it’s nowhere in sight? continued…

Four Ways to Chill Out Before an Interview

We know it all too well and at one point or another, we’ve all been there, done that.

Sweaty palms, excited, nervous, and a ball of anxiety overall.

Well, when it comes to acing an interview we’re pretty sure the best way to succeed is to act calm, cool and collected.

By incorporating a “never let ‘em see you sweat” mentality, you’ll be in better shape to think coherently and exude a confident presence. continued…

5 Ways to Find a Job Before It’s Posted

Submitting as many applications as you can through job boards is one way to land a gig, but the reality is that all jobs don’t magically appear on the Internet. Says freelancer and writing mentor Carol Tice, “In fact, the vast, vast majority of good-paying jobs will never be advertised. Stop waiting to spot them in ads.”

Want to tap into the hidden job market? (You know, those great gigs that haven’t been posted yet?)

Tip No. 1: Contact companies directly.

Amy Phillip, an executive career coach, recommends connecting directly with the person who hires. For journalists, that’s often the editor or managing editor, while it can be the director of marketing for copywriters and bloggers. “Find that person on LinkedIn and send an introduction,” she said.

This just in — Jobvite’s 2012 Social Job Seeker Survey revealed a lot of interesting stats, one of which is that approximately 76 percent of job seekers use social media in their hunt for a new gig.

Plus, it sounds like the job search isn’t like hitting an on or off button. Rather, it’s always on. The survey showed that 75 percent of employees are actively looking or are open to exploring new opportunities. continued…

Three Traits Recruiters Seek While Making Hiring Decisions

Psst. Over here.

We have a secret. Three, actually.

When recruiters speak to candidates, they not only sort out technical abilities and soft skills, they’re looking for specific traits and patterns. According to a post on ERE, here are a few of traits and associated questions to be aware of so you can be fully prepared.

Three Body Language Tips to Avoid During an Interview

Got posture? Good, we knew you did.

When it comes to interviewing, technical experience is one thing, soft skills are another and presentation is about tying it all up in a bow.

According to a piece on Forbes, there are several ways to sharpen your body language in order to aim to seal the deal. continued…

Two-Thirds of Job Seekers Start Looking Six Months Before Searching

According to a new survey, approximately two-thirds of job seekers start looking casually for a new job six months before they start pounding the pavement.

CareerBuilder’s 2012 Candidate Behavior Study revealed a lot goes on within those six months. Candidates check out a variety of sources to research opportunities like going online to company sites and Facebook pages. For instance, 84 percent log onto Google whereas 75 percent visit company sites.

Essentially, this info provides a lot of mojo and moxie to recruiters to keep their pipeline of potential talent active even when candidates are pretty passive. Above all, it’s a reminder to both job seekers and recruiters that a job search is a journey and in this case, it begins about six months before hard core networking and interviewing even occurs.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: Five Things to Overlook While Job Hunting

Ever feel like you’re putting too much pressure on yourself with the job search? Maybe you’re stressing certain things that aren’t even important in the eyes of the hiring manager and recruiter.

Well, as per a post on U.S. News & World Report, there are a few items you don’t need to fret about any more.

1. Your cover letter. Whether or not you address it to a hiring manager or specific person, it doesn’t really matter; content is what counts. Is it succinct yet informative? Spot on with grammar and spelling? Good, that’s all that counts.

2. Your resume design. In the piece, Alison Green writes, “What employers want from your resume design is a document that’s clean and uncluttered, easy to scan, not overly fancy, and puts the information we want in the places we expect to find it. Whatever design you choose that achieves those goals is fine with us.”

3. Your resume length. One or two pages? That is the question but definitely not a deal breaker. It’s fine for resumes to encompass two pages; anything longer than that will start feeling copious. This means you can fiddle with margins and fonts to fit it into two pages (or of course, magnify it if you’re right out of school and need to fill up space on a page.)

4. Your “personal brand.” Green reminds us employers don’t really care about personal brands. Rather, what’s truly important is doing good work. She points out in the piece, “The evangelists telling you that you must build a unique and recognizable personal brand are looking for a new concept to sell you in an overcrowded marketplace. Employers—the people actually thinking about hiring you—could care less. Do good work and build a good reputation, and forget the branding hype.”

5. Your thank-you note. If you’re torn between the e-mailed note or snail mailed one, fret not. The recruiter isn’t going to focus on form of communication but a.) the point that you sent one and b.) if it expresses enthusiasm and c.) references a point made during the interview. Similar to the cover letter, be sure it’s flawless with content.

Of course, the goal is to leave a lasting positive impression so whether or not you put a stamp on a note or quickly sent one via modern technology, the point is you’re expressing interest, you’re thanking them for their time, and following up.
