Media General’s Consolidation Plans: Jobs May Be In Jeopardy

We reported last October that Media General may be planning to consolidate its copyediting into a central location. After reading yesterday that one of Ken Otterbourg‘s reasons for resigning from his Media General-owned paper was that he disagreed with MG’s plans for the newsroom, we thought it time to revisit the issue.

In fact, Media General is considering a plan to consolidate the copy-editing and design of its three largest newspapers (in Winston-Salem, Richmond and Tampa) in one location.

“All our newsrooms have been informed we’re studying the concept,” corporate communications manager Ray Kozakewicz told MediaJobsDaily by phone, stressing that Media General has already made some consolidations (with one centralized center in Lynchburg, Va., and the other in Hickory, N.C.,) and that MG is not the first company to do this. (It’s true: Gannett consolidated the copy desks at four of its New Jersey papers in April of last year, eliminating at least ten jobs.)

So, the company still says no official decision’s been made, but apparently the rumors swirling are enough to make a managing editor resign with no new job lined up. This will be the story to watch in the coming weeks, we think.

Winston-Salem Journal managing editor Ken Otterbourg resigned his position today, citing “disagreements with Media General’s plans for our newsroom,” as well as saying “I want to try something else while I am young enough to do it.” He is 48, and has no new opportunity lined up, but we wish him the best.
