Three Ways to Cope With Rejection

rejectionNo.

It’s not a pretty word, let’s face it. Especially when it’s bestowed upon you. As in, “No, we don’t like your work.” Or, “No, that’s not a good idea.” Or simply the silent treatment which we pretty much take for a no anyway.

Per a piece on The Intern Queen, there are a few ways to shrug it off and not let it affect your day. Lauren Berger writes, “Rejection is the biggest fear that young people have about the workplace. And it make sense – in the media, we don’t usually read about people’s failures – we read about their successes.”

She adds, “But I promise, with every success comes a rejection. If I hadn’t been rejected countless times – I wouldn’t be running the business that I am today.”

Here are a few ways to handle the inevitable not-so-fuzzy-feeling…

1. Venting to people who can understand. Surround yourself with people who “get” you. Maybe they’re in your shoes or maybe they can simply relate. She writes, “I try not to vent to friends or family who might not understand the situation. Sometimes that just gets frustrating.”

2. I use my emotion as power. First, it’s normal to feel emotions and even more difficult to distance yourself and not take things personally but if you are feeling down and out, why not channel that negativity through a new project? Let it pummel you forward. “Take a deep breathe and tell yourself what you are going to do now that one option didn’t work out. Let your emotion fuel you!”

3. Go Outside. Seriously. We’re not kidding. Get some fresh air! Go for a walk. Crank up the tunes. Berger even mentions she has a rejection playlist on her phone that she listens to whenever she “needs to be ‘lifted up.’”
