What Bad Work Habit are You Willing to Break?

desk_lunch440When we read Gretchen Rubin’s latest blog post, we paid attention. Okay, it’s not like we haven’t paid attention other times but this one really caught our eyes for two main reasons.

The bestselling author of The Happiness Project revealed the topic of her next book: Habits!

First, there’s something downright infectious about Rubin’s enthusiasm for her new book, Before and After. We should all be this passionate about our next book, next video, next whatever that our name is proudly stamped upon!

She writes, “I really do believe this may be the most fascinating subject everIt’s the subject of habits. How do we make and break habits–really?”

And second, this got us thinking about our own habits. In particular as they relate to work, why we do things when we do.

For instance, we can certainly blog at various times throughout the day and leverage peak productivity times for activities such as conducting phone interviews with sources rather than invoicing.

So, let’s take a challenge, shall we? For the remainder of the week let’s track our habits mentally. When you get a cup of coffee is it because you really need a jolt of java or do you need to just get away from your desk for a few minutes? Do you traverse the same exact route to work every single day? Eat the same sandwich to the point the deli guy knows your routine?

In her blog, she writes, “Habit allows us to go from before to after, to make life easier and better. Habit is notorious—and rightly so—for its ability to direct our actions, even against our will; but by mindfully shaping our habits, we can harness the power of mindlessness as a sweeping force for serenity, energy, and growth.”
