This is a hard question. As a swimmer, Phelps can be eligible for multiple attempts for medals, unlike other athletes on team sports, etc.

Does the sheer number of medals make the best Olympian or does the athletic performance itself?

I love the women's beach volleyball team (Walsh and May-Trainor). It is unbelievably difficult to move as quickly and strongly as they do, covering an entire court in the sand. And they are in their mid-thirties, not youngsters at all by Olympic standards.

They get my vote.

Good choice, beenthere! Did you notice, too, that they thank everyone in sight on the court after their matches?

But just wait until Rafalca Romney performs tomorrow in Olympic horse ballet ...

phelps may be the best ever..at one sport..

but my vote would have to go to the decathlon people..especially to those who have competed in, and medaled in, more than one games..

there aren't many of them..

Dude knows how to hit the bong and stil break records. A more impressive American athlete than pussies like Tebow. (but still not GOAT)

This is their third Olympics and they have never even lost a set in Olympic play. They have won every single time they played, they are amazingly fit athletes.

It is really nice to see healthy women on tv for a change (versus the skinny/anorexic "ideal").

Other choice: 1980 men's hockey!! How could I forget Lake Placid??

Why do you yanks go so gaga over that hockey game? The soviet team was mediocre, the only real talent on team USA was Mike Ramsey, and maybe Brotean ( I wouldn't even include long time jets capt Christian). It wasn't even a medal game. High on patriotism, seriously low in great hockey.

Want tough oly athletes? Try winning medals in both summer and winter games. Canadian Clara Hughes (back again this year) won two bronze in 96 in cycling; gold, silver and two bronze in speed skating over last three winter Olys. She also raced four Tour de Frances. Better yet: nicest interviewee you'll ever meet.

Jim Thorpe...

won the Pentathlon AND the Decathlon. Played MLB and was a founding father of the NFL.
