EA Mobile Website Auto-Detects By Mobile Platform
I've written about EA (Electronic Arts) Mobile here before. But, I don't think I ever noticed or noted that if you point your smartphone browser at... ...it auto-detects whether you are using Google Android (T-Mobile G1), RIM Blackberry, Apple iPhone, or Windows Mobile Professional Edition (touch screen). It then displays games available for that platform. You can see that the site looks quite different when displayed on an HTC TyTn (Windows Mobile Professional Edition smartphone) on the left or an iPhone 3G on the right. Note that when I visited the site using a non-touchscreen Windows Mobile Standard Edition smartphone (T-Mobile Dash), I was presented with a web page that said no games were available for that platform. So, EAmobile games appear to be available only for touchscreen Windows Mobile devices.

AccuWeather Mobile Site Adds U.S. Flight Delay Information
I can't believe I haven't mentioned AccuWeather's mobile friendly website before today. One of the things I like about it is that you do not need to type in a special URL (website address). Just head to... ...and it auto-detects your mobile device and displays a mobile friendly version of its site. As an additional bonus, AccuWeather just added U.S. flight delay information to its mobile site this week. Clicking on the Flight Delays link on any page takes you to a page that shows a map of the continental U.S. and lists closed airports, arrival delays, departure delays, ground stop delays, and ground delays. Download Qik Streaming Video App Right to Your Phone
Qik is a multiplatform mobile app that lets you stream live video from a supported smartphone. Qik now has a technique to auto-identify your smartphone on their website and let you download the appropriate version of their streaming video app... Download & get qikking - right from your mobile phone I tried it on my Windows Mobile HTC TyTn (touch screen) smartphone. The website didn't display any identifying information (platform or device). But, it did know enough to let me download the correct installer to my phone. Point your smartphone to... ...to find out if your smartphone is one of the devices Qik supports. Tuesday Nov 11, 2008
Google Reader Translate Not Available in Mobile View
The Google Reader (RSS/Atom feed reader) blog announced that they added a language translation service to their feed reader yesterday... And, it works great... on a desktop (or notebook/netbook). But, the translation feature is not available when using the Google mobile view (say on an iPhone). Let's hope this feature crosses over to the mobile space soon! Intersquash Takes RSS Feeds to Create iPhone Friendly Sites (But Doesn't Work)
Intersquash is a free web service. It doesn't require any registration or login. It takes your website's RSS feed and creates an iPhone friendly website. I tested it with a personal website. You can see the result below.
Intersquash creates this by creating a Javascript snippet that you need to embed in between the HMTL HEAD tags on your site. This Javascript then redirects you to Intersquash where it turns your site's RSS feed into mobile friendly views. It specifically looks for the iPhone (or iPod touch's) Safari browser which IDs itself as iphone. So, the site will not redirect and reformat for other mobile devices. If you upload a 57x57 pixel large image, it can be used as a custom icon if someone saves your Intersquash-ed mobile friendly website on the iPhone's screen. Unless you have ads integrated in your RSS feeds, you'll lose Google Adsense and other monetization features. I'm not sure if I will leave it running on my site. There are other options. ADDENDUM: I should have tapped around the web page a bit more. It turns out that only one link in the list built from the RSS feed works. Removing it from my test blog site now. Google Updates Google Maps for Corporate Blackberry Users
This is what happens when the "app name for something" naming scheme is taken too far. Check out the title of this entry in the Google Mobile Blog... Updates to Google Maps for mobile for enterprises This update is specifically for users of corporate issued and controlled Blackberries. It lets enterprise IT managers enable features such as Street View and transit directions for these users. Facebook Mobile Now Lets You Comment on Friends' StatusThe Facebook blog recently turned on status comments for the Facebook mobile site... They report that there were almost a million status comments made from the mobile interface in the first 24 hours. Facebook has mobile apps for the Palm, Blackberry, and iPhone. But, if your mobile platform does not have a dedicated app, they also provide mobile friendly sites to try: - m.facebook.com works with nearly any mobile browser Wednesday Nov 05, 2008
TheOnion Semi-Mobile Device Friendly
The well-known internet humor site The Onion has a semi-mobile friendly website at... I say semi-mobile friendly because it looks fine on nearly all mobile device browsers except the iPhone (see above). It looks a bit better in landscape mode than portrait but is still difficult to read on an iPhone. Other phones including Windows Mobile based ones and the T-Mobile G1 (Google Android) display the site's fonts in a readable size. I should note that the language on the site is generally PG-13+ and its humor does not appeal across all demographic groups. Tuesday Nov 04, 2008
FlightStats.com & Other Free Mobile Friendly Flight Info Sites
I commented on an Information Week article recommeding seven for-fee iPhone apps yesterday. One of the apps listed is a $4.99 flight status app. I've been using the free mobile friendly website... ...for the last couple of years and have been pretty happy with its service. However, I went looking around for other sites and found a somewhat old list of mobile friendly travel sites on WapReview.com that still looks very useful: Airlines, reservation sites, flight tracking Check it out the next time you travel by air. CNN Mobile Redirecting to mLogic Content Management System
If you've pointed your mobile browser at... ...anytime during the last couple of days, you might have noticed that the site looks a bit different. And, if you take a look at the URL web address text box at the top of your browser, you'll note that you are no longer on the CNN.com website. What you will see is... I'll guess that "cnnec" stands for CNN Election Coverage. mLogic is a mobile web content management system from... Their mobile CMS platform is the engine behind a lot of TV station and newspaper websites based on their list of customers. It will be interesting to see if CNN contracted Crisp Wireless just for the expected mobile web access deluge expected during this U.S. Presidential election day or if it is a permanent switch for their mobile friendly website.
