Another MVNO Packs It InMocoNews is reporting that Sonopia, an affinity-based MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) service founded by Juha Christensen and launched just a year ago, is closing down, reports former senior executive Tapio Anttila on his blog. Christensen's pedigree includes being one of the founders of Symbian as well as the head of Macromedia's mobile initiatives. That's fine, you ask, but who is Sonopia? The MVNO ran on top of Verizon Wireless; it existed to help organizations launch branded mobile services easily, through its online service, and then split the revenues generated as a result, the report said. Early clients included the National Wildlife Federation (NWF Mobile); the Long Island Ducks, a minor-league baseball team (Liducks Mobile); and Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society (ODK Mobile). So Sonopia, in effect, was a sort of MVNO-of-MVNOs. Well, at least Helio is still around. *glances nervously at watch* Email This Post |
