Adobe Improves Mobile Flash PlayerReuters reports that Adobe Systems released new software for its popular Flash Player. The update promises to bring the quality of live video on mobile phones closer to that of video on computers. Normally an improvement to a particular mobile video technology isn't something we'd mention here. But Flash is different. As the article points out, Flash made possible the rapid rise of pioneering online video site YouTube--and it's the kind of thing that can eventually bridge the technological (and content, for that matter) gap between cell phones and desktop PCs, as it works independently of the device the video is played on. Gary Kovacs, in charge of marketing at Adobe's mobile unit, called Flash Lite 3 "the most significant advance we've made in mobile" and said that it brought Adobe "closer to being able to release software versions for mobile and desktop simultaneously."
