Despite details of its future being up in the air, AOL unveiled plans for a new open mobile platform that it plans to have ready for developers this summer. The platform will give developers access to all the tools and source code they need to create apps that work across all major mobile platforms and operating systems, the company said.

AOL's Open Mobile Platform will include an XML-based next-gen markup language, an ultra-lightweight mobile device client and an application server. "The use of mobile services continues to increase at a steady rate, and for any developer looking to build applications for this growing space, the AOL Open Mobile Platform couldn't make it any easier," AOL senior VP Steve Murphy said in a statement. "Our new open platform will provide developers with a new breed of tools, including source code, for creating robust mobile services and will encourage product innovation."

We seem to remember an announcement in November from a slew of mobile industry bigwigs about a little something they called Android, "a fully integrated mobile 'software stack' that consists of an operating system, middleware, user-friendly interface and applications." Oh, and Android's available through open source, too.

It will be interesting to see how these two "open" platforms play together, especially if AOL and Yahoo end up together.
