Microsoft has taken a huge step in its attempt to overtake Adobe's Flash as the video technology to use, at least in the mobile world.

This week the software giant inked a deal with handset leader Nokia to include its Silverlight platform on Nokia's high-end S60 smartphones. The S60 mobile platform, which is built on the Symbian operating system, is used in more than half of all smartphones, including those from LG and Samsung as well as Nokia's own handsets, the BBC reports.

According to the article, Microsoft is still hard at work on developing a Windows Mobile version of Silverlight.

Despite the deal with Nokia, Silverlight still has a long, long way to go before reaching Flash status - Adobe reportedly has partnerships with 18 of the top 20 mobile device makers, including Nokia.
