TiVo HD XL - a hub for mobile devices in the future?

Good friend Dave Zatz breaks the news on the TiVo HD XL with a whopping 1TB of storage for a 150 hours of HD content and more SD content than you'll probably ever need. With the links to other devices in the home, one has to wonder if TiVo can transition their box as not only the STB of choice but a repository of all consumer digital content that's able to link to all sorts of other screens, notably mobile ones.

TiVo's still a powerful force to watch after ten years. This is one company to stay tuned to. I expect there's more ahead.

What's going on with nuevasync?

I have been using Nuevasync to act a sync conduit between my Google calendar and Windows Mobile devices. It does this by effectively appearing as an Exchange server that Windows Mobile and other devices that support the ActiveSync/Exchange protocol such as the iPhone.

The service has been in beta but has been flaky. earlier this week, it looks like they totally disappeared. It's back but sync is still flaky. They do warn it's in beta but it's becoming too unreliable for me.

Peggle reinforces the idea of the phone as a mass market mobile games platform

One of my favorite games of all time is Peggle. PopCap announced today that's it's no going beyond the PC, Mac and iPod to a variety of handsets.

Yes, the phone is clearly a major mass market game console.

For those unfamiliar, Peggle is a cross of pinball, pool and pachinko and in the end, creates something entirely new. Can't way to try the new mobile versions.

Widescreen DS would all Nintendo to further differentitate themeselves in the mobile games space

Rumors from the folks at IGN about a widescreen, dual touch Nintendo DS on the way.

This has so many interesting implications for where Nintendo might be going in the mobile console space. Nintendo has wisely kept the focus very much on gaming and more importantly, recognizing that mobile gaming is very different than the living room console. While Sony's efforts have been about taking living room console games and shrinking them down and emphasizing features such as media playback, internet browsing and Skype, Nintendo has focused on creating new experience optimized for mobile (much as they've changed the living room experience with the Wii).

A move like this would allow them to further differentiate themselves not only from direct competition like Sony but allow them to further distance themselves from the phone as a casual gaming platform. This is one to keep an eye on.

The iPodification of video

Great post from Jeremy Toeman at Live Digitally on the future of video, the likely death of Blu Ray and the iPodification of video. Jeremy totally nails it.

Finally, I also believe we're going to see an "iPodification" of video. In the 90s we were well on our way to replacing the CD as format, with SACD and DVD-Audio as possible follow-ups. Both offered vast improvements in sound quality that were pretty apparent with a decent stereo. Today, however, the average person is listening to music at worse-than-CD quality, on their iPods/iPhones, home stereos, Sonoses (or is that Sonii?), etc.

Yep, it's not about HD per se, it's about the ability for video content to flow seamlessly from place to place, device to device and screen to screen. The three screen consumer is a myth that's wrong, it's more like thirty three screens and the ability to allow content to flow through those eco systems is what's the game changer.

Android dreams aren't necessarily a reality

Interesting post from Fred Wilson, talking about Android and the role it can help play Google relative to the cloud and the browser.

"The iPhone laid out many of the killer mobile device innovations, but its a closed device, a closed carrier relationship, and even a closed application store. Android will take all of those good ideas and put them on every device, with every carrier, and in partnership with every app developer. You'd have thought that Apple would have learned the lesson that you can't control the entire ecosystem with the Mac, but they did not."

It's a noble thought but it's just not true, certainly early on. Fred, I think you're projecting far too much what you want Android to be, not what it is. In fact, the first Android devices are looking exactly like carrier driven, subsidized devices that may be lacking many of the core services needed for a modern smartphone user. Sure, someone *could* build an Android device that is unlocked and work on any GSM carrier but it would then cost significantly more and probably still not be optimized for 3G across the board (there's still a limit on how many antennas and radios I can put in a single device). Of course, someone could also build a CDMA version for Verizon or Sprint. It's just I don't see that happening anytime soon. Android has a lot of potential but there's folks reading far too much into what Google's doing. Perhaps that's part of the mystique but it's going to take more than one device, on one carrier before the landscape changes. I still believe Android is the most important mobile Linux platform out there but game changing? Not yet, not hardly.

Myth of the US wireless shattered - First Take

There's a long standing belief that the US has been far behind Western Europe in wireless technologies and 3G adoption in particular. That was true for a while but a new study out this morning from Comscore shatters that myth.

According to the report, the US has caught up with Western Europe in the adoption of 3G with 28.4 percent of American mobile subscribers having 3G devices versus 28.3 percent in the largest countries in Europe.

Bottom line - the US is a wireless backwater no more. With the adoption of sophisticated devices by US consumers, there's about to be an explosion of services and new content offerings that will re-define the mobile space over the next two years. The mobile market is looking an awful lot like the PC market did fifteen years ago as consumers first started connecting their PCs online and entire worlds were created as the result. The ubiquity of a sophisticated, always connected device is potentially a far bigger game changer than the PC was.

Wippit closes up, another victim of iPod/iTunes

After eight years, Wippit closes shop in the digital music space, joining the ranks of those vanquished by Apple and the iTunes/iPod eco system. It was a great idea to try and do a legal p to p service but it shows that without the proper label support, you're not going to get very far. I'm surprised they've actually made it this long.

The reluctance of the labels to get involved and the fact that devices drive users to music services and stores (not the other way around) ultimately led to their demise.

Sony's Reader finally going where it belongs

This is exactly where electronic eBook readers belong, in the classroom. It will be interesting to see the results of this experiment at Penn State. From Sony's release.

This fall, Penn State University Libraries and the English Department will begin a year-long pilot project with student groups using the Sony Reader Digital Book, a portable electronic reading device that can hold books, audio files, and other downloaded materials. Sony donated 100 of the devices to the Libraries for the project that will test the utility of e-books in a higher education environment. The study will explore the potential of the Sony Readers in a variety of settings, including the Libraries' leisure reading program, undergraduate and graduate classrooms, academic research projects, and as a service for people with disabilities.

Sprint launches the HTC Diamond Touch - First Take

Sprint's the first US carrier to get the HTC Diamond Touch. Katie Boehret took a look at it for the WSJ and I'm not sure I agree with her review. Notably, she ignores that the Diamond is a full VGA resolution screen and that's an important distinction. When the Diamond first came out I wrote ten quick thoughts.

1. The screen continues to blow me away every time I turn it on. You really need to see this to appreciate it.

2. The VGA resolution along with the TouchFlo 3D UI is really pushing the limits of the processor. Every so often, the unit lags a half second or so behind me. It's not horrible but it is annoying.

3. It's possible for most users to use this device without every seeing Windows Mobile underneath. TouchFlo UI is lovely to look at and work with and changes the whole Windows Mobile experience into something that looks like it was built in this century. Microsoft, please note what HTC is doing here.

4. Following a gadget trend, this device is extremely caress-able but it also will show every fingerprint and smudge. Matte finishes anyone?

5. When plugged in, the device offers the option to show up as an external disk. Makes super fast transfers that are drag and drop possible. Also charges off of USB making it a snap to take on the road. Too soon to see how well the battery life is and whether i can make it through a full day of usage.

6. It's not upgradeable, it's 4gb internal storage and that's it. If you need a more expandable device, you need to look at the new TouchPro (which is more of a power user device).

7. Opera mobile is wicked cool and light years ahead of Pocket IE. It's nice that it's the default browser. It doesn't quite match the performance of Safari on the iPhone though.

8. YouTube viewing app is cool and works well.

9. Nice 2nd camera on front makes for video chat realities when the 3G US version gets here.

10. Did I mention that screen... WOW.

Sprint ups that ante with 3G support, a slew of services including music, TV and Nav. TouchFlo is much improved and eliminates that slight lag I found in the Euro version. Sprint also gets the idea that this is a device for both business and consumer users and that there's a message for both. In short, this is an important launch for both Sprint and HTC and brings a very cool Windows Mobile device to the mass market in the US.

I should have one here shortly for a full review.
