Some Magazines Have a Shaky First Quarter And They're the Ones Still Standing [FishbowlNY]
Every once in a while it's interesting to look at the Publishers Information Bureau numbers, particularly those of magazines that folded during the first quarter, like ElleGirl and Cargo. More troubling, though, are the numbers rolling in from magazines that are still here not exactly reassuring.
Early Show Producer Suffers Emergency At Work, Dies At Hospital [TVNewser]
Coordinating producer Gary Chern suffered a medical emergency while at work, and later died at Roosevelt Hospital. Steve Friedman called it "a very sad and very great loss."
Confirmed: Harvilla to Take Over for Eddy as New Voice Music Editor [FishbowlNY]
We had been hearing rumblings all morning in the aftermath of Chuck Eddy's ousting as head music dude at the Village Voice. East Bay Express music editor Rob Harvilla confirmed in an e-mail that he, in fact, will be taking over for Eddy at the Voice: "Indeed, it's true." If his reviews are as concise as his e-mails, we may grow to like the new Chuck Eddy.
22 Designers Stranded On an Island in Maine [UnBeige]
No, it's not Survivor: Design Island. But it's definitely a lot like summer camp. And it's supposed to be one of the coolest design conference experiences ever.
It's Hard Out There for a Critic [FishbowlLA]
Has there ever been a worse time to be Roger Ebert or Ken Turan or Manohla Dargis? Not only are you now competing for attention with every schmuck who has a blog and an opinion, but the studios are increasingly realizing probably correctly they don't need you.
Matt Cooper Heads Online [FishbowlDC]
Word from Time magazine today that Matthew Cooper, he of Valerie Plame fame, is leaving the White House beat to become political editor of Time.com.
Gay Talese Takes OCD to New Heights [GalleyCat]
I think Charles McGrath's profile of the venerated founder of New Journalism was supposed to make the 74-year-old writer look good, but instead it seems to do rather the opposite. Take the fact that Talese's new memoir appears in bookshelves next week after a 14-year gap, mostly a victim to his obsession with tinkering and revising.
I Will Pay You to Say This To Your Editor [MBToolbox]
Via Gawker: "I guess I wasn't clear yesterday in my emails to you re heds and deks. When I take the time to write heds and deks I expect them to run, barring factual errors." Fun times over at BusinessWeek.com!
