Maerdar 3.0: 'Unstoppable' Radar Announces New Hires, 'Long-Term Backing' [FishbowlNY]
Maer Roshan's third incarnation of Radar is launching much like his second: rumors of a new round of investors, followed by rumors of new high-profile staffers, followed by a story in The New York Times about how it will roll out as a Web property before publishing a print edition with Roshan explaining why it didn't work last time, and why it will now. FBNY: Is Matt Haber Radar's next hire? FBNY: Reactions to Radar.
Olbermann To O'Reilly: 'You Can't Even Lie Well Any More' [TVNewser]
Last night on Countdown, Olbermann tried to get inside O'Reilly's head: "It's slipping away from you. You don't know what to do. You can't even lie well any more. Seriously, I understand. It's called panic."
SF Publisher Jim Baen, 1943-2006 [GalleyCat]
In a sad update to our story a few weeks ago about Jim Baen's stroke, the founding editor and publisher of Baen Books died yesterday, reports author David Drake. "Jim had the advantage over some editors in that he knew what a story is," Drake recalls. "He had the advantage over most editors in being able to spot talent before somebody else had published it."
Perplexed, But Not Puzzled [FishbowlLA]
The Orange County Register's new computer system somehow replaced a page that was suppose to run yesterday's Sudoku and Dear Abby advice column with a page from June 8. When readers flooded the paper with calls, a feature editor promised on her outgoing voicemail that she'd send individual callers the right Sudoku puzzle.
Greet Minds Think Alike ... And Sometime They Talk, Too [UnBeige]
If you've got some time, we highly suggest downloading this great PDF that's from the new issue of Provider magazine, a conversation between Sam Hecht and John Maeda. We found it by way of Dezain, which always features loads of great resources in a quick, easy method.
Protecting Your Laptop [MBToolbox]
Yes, you can buy a laptop lock, but be careful some of them are super-crummy, but they might deter the opportunistic thief. And be sure to lock it to something secure. In a hotel room without a laptop-sized safe, lock it to the pipes under the bathroom sink.
