One of the country's top publishers has turned to a man from the editorial side to run its business. Michael Pietsch, the editor of Keith Richards' Life, David Foster Wallace's The Pale King and the many novels of James Patterson, has been named CEO of Hachette Book Group. Pietsch has headed the publisher's Little, Brown and Co. division for 11 years. GalleyCat After seven years as CEO, David Young will step down next year. Back in the UK, Young will assume the role of deputy chief executive of Hachette UK and CEO of Orion Publishing Group. NYT / Media Decoder A gregarious, well-liked figure at Hachette who has held his current position since 2006, Young has successfully brought the company up to speed digitally while navigating relations between the Hachette Book Group and its corporate parent, Hachette Livre, a publishing company based in France. Digital Book World Pietsch, 55, comes from the editorial side of publishing. He got his start in 1979 as an editor at Charles Scribner & Sons, editing fiction, including Ernest Hemingway's posthumous memoir, The Dangerous Summer. In 1985, he moved to Crown Publishing, where he edited such authors as Chuck Berry, Martin Amis and Mark Leyner. Pietsch joined Little, Brown and Co. in 1991 and rose to the rank of editor-in-chief by 1998. He became the company's publisher in 2001. Publishers Weekly Pietsch said, in a statement: "I am looking forward to working with all of HBG's brilliant publishers and executives in making this company the No. 1 destination for writers, agents, distribution clients, and the inspired people who choose to work in book publishing."

TV Review: Katie Talks and Hawks (San Francisco Chronicle / @WaitWhat_TV)
You could be forgiven if you mistakenly thought you'd tuned into an infomercial for Weight Watchers during the first half hour of Katie Couric's new syndicated talk show, Katie, which premiered Monday. It probably made strategic sense to have singer-designer-tabloid princess Jessica Simpson on as Couric's first guest, but 30 minutes of soft-ball questions and unrelenting promotion for Weight Watchers got old fairly quickly. TVNewser Simpson gushed about her new role as a Weight Watchers poster girl. Then came a sneak preview of her Weight Watchers ad, followed by a full segment joined by her Weight Watchers coach. The capper was a free two-week Weight Watchers membership, via Katie's website. To be kind, Jessica Simpson was no Sarah Palin, but Couric appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the absence of heavy lifting. HuffPost Anderson Cooper is a syndication veteran compared to Couric, having already wrapped one season of Anderson. But he might as well be starting a new show, since just about everything will be different in Season 2. Variety / BLTv Couric and Jeff Probst both launched their syndicated talk shows Monday, becoming the latest well-known talents to risk the indignation of washing out in the afternoons. So how did they do, realizing one can only discern so much from such a premiere?

Nielsen Shows How People Use TV Differently (Yahoo! News / AP)
The number of U.S. homes that don't get traditional television service continues to increase, but that doesn't mean they don't have TVs. The Nielsen company said in a report issued Tuesday that three-quarters of the estimated 5 million homes that don't get TV signals over the airways or through cable, satellite or telecommunications companies have televisions anyway. Many of these homes are satisfied to use their TVs for games or get programming through DVDs or services like Netflix or Apple TV, said Dounia Turrill, senior vice president for client insights at Nielsen.

GoDaddy: No Customer Data Compromised (UPI)
GoDaddy said no customer data were compromised by a major outage that brought down the U.S. Web hosting giant and its 10.5 million customers for several hours. "Most customer hosted sites back online," GoDaddy said on Twitter about 8:30 p.m. EDT Monday. "We're working out the last few kinks for our site & control centers. No customer data compromised." TechCrunch A member of Anonymous known as AnonymousOwn3r is claiming responsibility, and makes it clear this is not an Anonymous collective action. NYT / Bits The person behind the Twitter account @AnonymousOwn3r took responsibility for the attack and said all of GoDaddy's servers were knocked out with what is known as a distributed denial of service attack, or DDoS attack, in which a site is flooded with traffic until it collapses under the load. USA Today GoDaddy, which hosts more than 5 million sites, has been a subject of hackers' ire because it publicly supported federal anti-piracy legislation called the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA.

Wolf Blitzer was supposed to be hosting a toast and a ribbon cutting to show off the brand new CNN studio Monday to his Washington colleagues, but he did so with an added plus -- he unveiled a new pair of glasses. TVNewser Some details about the new CNN studio: There are 109 monitors, including three video walls and two "Magic Walls." There is a glass divider, allowing for two simultaneous programs to be live at once, or it can be retracted, allowing for one large, open space for events like election night. The project took 504 days from start to finish, and required 17,000 pounds of structural steel. Lighting in the studio allows the designers to virtually "paint" the studio any color producers wish, to set the mood.

Losing Its Place on the iPhone, YouTube Introduces a New iPhone App (NYT / Bits)
The new iPhone will have a noticeable absence: the little TV screen that is the YouTube app. But YouTube viewers need not despair. On Tuesday, YouTube's own iPhone app hit the App Store. CBS News / AP YouTube is being reprogrammed for the iPhone and iPad amid the latest fallout from the growing hostility between Google and Apple. The changes are being made because Google Inc. and Apple Inc. didn't renew a five-year licensing agreement that established YouTube's video service as one of the built-in applications in the operating system that runs the iPhone and iPad. CNET For YouTube, breaking with Apple meant a chance to bring the slick, modern experience it built for Android devices to hundreds of millions of current and future iPhone owners.

HarperCollins has struck new agreements with Amazon and other retailers that allow its eBooks to be sold at a discount, the publisher said Monday. Some current best sellers released by HarperCollins, including The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva and Solo by Hope Solo, were being sold for $9.99 on Amazon's website Monday afternoon. After Summer of Turmoil, Oxford American Appoints Roger Hodge Editor (NYT / Media Decoder)
After enduring weeks of unflattering attention over the firing of its editor, The Oxford American has hired a successor: Roger D. Hodge, a Texas-born editor and veteran of New York media. Hodge, who was the editor of Harper's magazine from 2006 to 2010, will become the second editor in the 20-year history of The Oxford American, a feisty southern journal of arts and culture. Arkansas Times / Arkansas Blog Hodge is the author of The Mendacity of Hope: Barack Obama and the Betrayal of American Liberalism. He was fired at Harper's in 2010 in what appeared to be a personal dispute with the publisher.

I can all but guarantee that you're nowhere near as jazzed about it as Topeka Capital analyst Brian White, who says that the iPhone 5 launch will be the "biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history." White notes that the iPhone 4S had pre-orders totaling 1 million in 24 hours, but he believes that this figure will rise to 1.3-1.5 million for the iPhone 5. CNNMoney Industry analysts are already predicting that Apple's iPhone 5, widely expected to be unveiled on Wednesday, will be the best-selling smartphone of all time. Each new iPhone has outsold the previous version, and the iconic device has been the top-selling mobile phone since its 2007 debut.

Slow Start for Wiley (Publishers Weekly)
Results were slightly weaker than expected in the first quarter of fiscal 2013 at John Wiley, but company executives still expect to meet full-year forecasts, company CEO Steve Smith said. For the quarter ended July 31, revenue fell 4 percent, to $411 million and net income fell 29 percent, to $36.1 million.

Sociable Labs Monday released its findings regarding how online retailers implement Facebook's Login Button. The company examined how the top 500 online retailers integrated the plugin as an alternative option for their account creation, site registration, and site login processes. AllFacebook Only 30 of the top 500 online retailers, or just 6 percent, have added the option of logging in with Facebook to their account-creation process, and of those 30, 30 percent are shooting themselves in the foot by requiring users to create separate passwords for their sites, according to the results of a new study from Sociable Labs.
