Times Editor Regrets Handling of Leak Case (NYT)
In a memo to the staff Bill Keller said he wished he had "sat her down for a thorough debriefing" after reporter Judith Miller had been subpoenaed. Keller said she "seems to have misled" the newspaper's Washington bureau chief, Philip Taubman. Huffington Post: I'm assuming that Keller's memo "slipped out" on Friday because he knows that on Sunday the paper's public editor, Barney Calame, is going to write a devastating critique of the Times and he wanted to do some pre-emptive self-flagellation, writes Arianna Huffington. FishbowlNY: Judith Miller is so out of a job (includes text of Keller memo). WaPo: Howard Kurtz on the new rift between Keller and Miller. LAT: There are very good reasons to support a national shield law, but those who choose to do so must make that choice admitting that it inevitably will be exploited by vindictive public officials like Libby and abused by self-serving reporters like Miller, writes Tim Rutten. E&P: Miller's attorney blasts her critics.
Dowd: Miller a 'Woman of Mass Destruction' (NYT via Peking Duck)
"Judy hopes to cover 'the same thing I've always coveredthreats to our country,'" writes Maureen Dowd. "If that were to happen, the institution most in danger would be the newspaper in your hands." BuzzMachine: One Dowd column does not a catharsis make, writes Jeff Jarvis. NewsBlog: This couldn't appear if Miller had newsroom support, writes Steve Gillard.
Times Public Editor Blasts Paper, Miller (NYT)
Byron Calame: It is the duty of the paper to be straight with its readers, and whatever the management reason was for not doing so, the readers didn't get a fair shake. Newsweek: Times staff is at war with Miller.
