Lucrative Satellite Radio Deals Vanishing (NYP)
If any more money from Sirius Satellite Radio comes Howard Stern's way, he should take it. So should Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, the major sports leagues and any other content provider that has a deal with Sirius or XM Satellite Radio. That's because the lucrative contracts Sirius and XM have been doling out for programming are drying up. Fast.
Group Led by New York Family May Buy Air America (WSJ)
A consortium led by the French family, which owns TV concern WRNN, is near a deal to buy the assets of Air America's struggling parent Piquant. An agreement could be announced as early as today. Any agreement would need to be approved by the bankruptcy court. If the deal doesn't go through, it increases the likelihood that Piquant could face imminent liquidation.
Big Media's Crush on Social Networking (NYT)
Richard Siklos: Over the last few weeks, media companies have accelerated their efforts in social networking. Many of the ventures sound like logical extensions of existing media brands because, hey, media companies are all about attracting and keeping audiences and then figuring out ways to bring them closer to marketers. Mediaweek: Flip, Condé Nast's soon-to-launch answer to MySpace for teen girls, will offer its users an unprecedented amount of control: over what advertising they see on the site and in what manner it is displayed.
Beeb in Talks on Google Link-Up (Guardian)
The BBC is in advanced negotiations with Google to make programming available via a branded channel on the search giant's video-sharing site. It is understood that BBC executives are keen that the deal, which involves BBC Worldwide and the BBC, is eventually expanded to include putting content on Google-owned YouTube.
Showdown Looms in Congress Over Drug Advertising on TV (NYT)
Drug advertising aimed at consumers, a fast-growing category that reached $4.5 billion last year, will face hard scrutiny in the new Congress, according to industry critics in both the House and Senate. The consumer ads will be on the griddle early in this session at hearings on the user fees that manufacturers pay to speed the reviewing of new drugs by the Food and Drug Administration.
Art Buchwald's Son Calls Past Year 'A Rollercoaster' (E&P)
Art Buchwald's only son, Joel, said caring for his ailing father for the past year had been a series of ups and downs, but he welcomed the chance to be with him and said during his final months he "had a great time." Buchwald will be cremated and his ashes interned on Martha's Vineyard, next to his wife, his son said. A funeral is expected to be held in March.
Porn Industry Finding High Definition TV May Be a Little Too Real (NYT)
Pornography has long helped drive the adoption of new technology, from the printing press to the videocassette. Now pornographic movie studios are releasing high-definition DVDs. But they have discovered that the technology is sometimes not so sexy. The high-definition format is accentuating imperfections in the actors from a little extra cellulite on a leg to wrinkles around the eyes.
