Last summer, The New York Times announced that it had donated its archives to the New York Public Library. 2007: The Year of the Digital Niche Acquisition for Mags (Folio:)
In M&A terms, 2007 had several market-defining moments. A strong start in both volume and value yielded to a fourth-quarter stall and the strategics laid the groundwork for their likely 2008 M&A comeback, according to a recent report by DeSilva + Phillips. Scientologists Hit Back at German Newspaper for Cruise/Goebbels Comparison (Evening Standard)
The Church of Scientology has condemned a German newspaper after they published comments comparing Tom Cruise to World War II propagandist Joseph Goebbels. Following the leak of a Scientology video last week, tabloid Bild published comments by World War II historian Guido Knopp likening Cruise's speech to propaganda delivered by Goebbels in Nazi Germany.

Rumor is that he hasn't told anyone at Alpha Media yet. A call to Carlin had not been returned as of 12:15 p.m. Wednesday.
News Producers Gird Their Loins For 'Giga Tuesday' (NYO)
Paul Friedman, vice president for CBS News, said that he will spend the super night strapped into a headset, in the CBS News control room, helping to flip and shift and shuffle dozens of fast moving parts reports from the field, exit poll data, delegate calculations into one (hopefully!) seamless production of gripping political theater.
Former Viacom President Terrence Elkes Dies (NYT)
Terrence Elkes, a lawyer who rose to become president of Viacom in the 1980s and oversaw some major acquisitions, but left after Sumner Redstone bought control of the company, died on Friday. Although Viacom has since bought and sold many assets, the company made a number of crucial purchases under Elkes, including control of MTV and Showtime.
Borrell: Candidates Still Favoring Old to New Media (Mediaweek)
This may be the Internet age, but when it comes to political advertising, the traditional media are still candidates' preferred channels. Online political advertising will total only $20 million in 2008, according to a forecast from Borrell Associates. Online political advertising lags online's 9 percent overall ad share, representing less than 0.5 percent of 1 percent of all political advertising.
