Joke Book Editor Settles Copyright Suit With Leno, NBC (AP via USAT)
A woman who published books of jokes by Jay Leno and other comedians without their permission has apologized and promised to stop, an attorney said Wednesday. Judy Brown and her publishers settled a federal copyright infringement lawsuit filed on behalf of NBC Studios; Leno; Rita Rudner; Jimmy Brogan; Diane Nichols; Sue Pascoe; Kathleen Madigan and Bob Ettinger.
Atlantic Opens Up Its Archives for Free (The Atlantic)
Editor's Note: Now, in addition to such offerings as blogs, author dispatches, slideshows, interviews, and videos, readers can also browse issues going back to 1995, along with hundreds of articles dating as far back as 1857, the year The Atlantic was founded. We're pleased to bring The Atlantic before a broader online audience.
Googling the New York Times (Guardian)
Dan Kennedy: It makes sense that the moment may have come for the Times to find a deep-pocketed angel to pull it out of what threatens to become a death spiral. But gaining access to all that high-quality content would be tempting, especially since Google has shown an unparalleled ability to monetize that content through advertising-supported search.
Reader's Digest Gets Ex-Blueprint Exec (Folio:)
Reader's Digest has appointed Tom Prince, who conceived and oversaw Martha Stewart's failed Blueprint, as its executive editor. Prince had been Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's vice president and development editor. Prince's hiring is the first for editor Peggy Northrop, who jumped ship from More to RDA last fall.
Cojo Is a Red Carpet Hero (Forbes)
James Brady: Not all heroic figures are square-jawed, broad-shouldered, eagle-eyed or have rippling abs. Take a fashion-obsessed, shallow, effete, lip gloss-wearing and heavily made-up gadfly (his word) from Montreal named Steven Cojocaru who made a living, and a very good one, swapping shallow inanities on the red carpets of showbiz with other self-absorbed and appalling folk.
Breaking: Series Of Concentric Circles Emanating From Glowing Red Dot (The Onion)
One of the video offerings this week from the satirical weekly The Onion spoofs the way that newscasts often rely on mysterious, colorful graphics to make their point. "Experts are still trying to determine the effect of the concentric circles on the long squiggly green objects located in the blue area."
