CNN Hires Managing Editor From NPR (NYT/TV Decoder)
A radio veteran is moving to television and taking a print job title: Jay Kernis, the senior vice president of programming for National Public Radio, is becoming the managing editor of CNN. Kernis will oversee content development out of New York for CNN, supervising the news planning, health, technology and environment, entertainment, and guest bookings units of the network's newsgathering operation.

Will Bunch: For the past couple of years, a number of change-minded journalists, academics and engaged citizens have been discussing a lot of great ideas for saving the news business: Teaching reporters how to wield video cameras on assignment, to file breaking news for the Web, to use a blog to cover a local beat like mass transit, or work as moderators with engaged citizen journalists. What's almost never mentioned in these discussions is the human factor.

Pope Calls on Media to Adopt 'Info-Ethics' (Reuters)
Pope Benedict called on the media on Thursday to practice "info-ethics", saying it was often used irresponsibly to spread violence and impose "distorted models" of life. In his message for the Catholic Church's World Communications Day, Benedict said that while the media did much good, it was also often used for ideological reasons and tried to create reality rather than report it.
Chicago News Anchor Dies in Snowmobile Accident (Chicago Tribune)
WBBM-Ch. 2 morning news anchor Randy Salerno was killed Thursday night in a snowmobiling accident in Eagle River, Wis., the station is reporting on its Web site. "Alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor in the crash," the police department said in a news release.

Expanding in the coming months with a variety of mostly five-seven minute programming, ranging from mini-documentaries to comedy, dramatic and reality-based fare, the broadband channel will also host a few select half-hour shows.
