Rumor: NBC & Hollywood Foreign Press May Sue WGA Over No Golden Globes (Deadline Hollywood Daily)
Nikki Finke: I'm told by sources that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC are on the verge of taking legal action against the WGA for actions leading to the cancellation of this year's Golden Globes. Really, could Jeff Zucker possibly be more of a putz? I say the WGA should countersue the NBC Universal midget for impersonating a mogul (and the HFPA for impersonating a legitimate news organization).
How to Be a Gawker (New York Mag/Daily Intel)
"We need to put back the Gawkeresque angry-creative-underclass glint to our voice," Valleywag contributor Paul Boutin wrote in a self-serious and totally fascinating memo passed on to Gawker Media editors yesterday by managing editor Noah Robischon. The memo to the various writers in Nick Denton's snarky blog empire suggests that they take care to make sure each item contains a "glint of nastiness."
Time Editor: Someday There Will Be People Who Don't Know There's a Print Version (Folio:)
Time magazine's managing editor Richard Stengel said the mag needed to regain its status as a vital read, in a way that vaguely echoed the luxe leanings of other high-end publications. "We have to become a more premium product with beautiful paper and photography," he said. "Each medium needs to do what it does best. A magazine should be something you're addicted to."
Officials Step Up Net-Neutrality Efforts (WSJ)
Big broadband companies are headed for a clash with Washington over whether consumers have a right to get as much as they want from the Internet, as fast as they want it, without paying extra for the privilege. Complaints that cable titan Comcast Corp. is deliberately delaying some Internet traffic are prompting moves in Washington to block efforts by broadband providers to favor some kinds of Internet traffic over others.
Should Journalists Vote? (Politico)
Mike Allen: When you're assigned to a candidate for senator or governor, oftentimes you ride in their van. When they're tired, you're tired. When you're hungry, they're hungry. When they're sick, you're sick. I just wouldn't feel right about hanging out with and writing about a candidate after rendering a secret thumbs-up or thumbs-down.
Ex-Life & Style Editor Launches Web Site (Folio:)
Mark Pasetsky, who served as Life & Style's general manager and, later, its editor-in-chief, yesterday announced a launch of a Web site that will cover, at least in part, his old magazine. The blog, CoverAwards.com, will feature content focused on magazine covers, newspaper covers and Web Site home pages.
