Playboy Launching Energy Drink New Yorker to Follow? (Chicago Tribune/The Stew)
Christopher Borrelli: The Playboy Energy Drink includes "subtle notes of fruit and vanilla ... ginseng and guarana extract." And, says the release, it gives "customers a taste of the lifestyle that has always been associated with the Playboy brand." This got us wondering: A natural brand extension for any publication is the energy drink. With this in mind, media conglomerates, we have done the hard work.
What the Lindsay Lohan Photos Are Worth (Forbes)
Louis Hau: Exactly how much is it worth to score exclusive nude photos of a hot celebrity? In the case of New York magazine's Web site, more than $500,000 so far, at least on paper. For or a site that's averaged around a million page views a day lately, the results were stunning. NYmag.com recorded a total of more than 40 million page views Monday and Tuesday. NYT: No matter Lohan's protestations, the pictures ask viewers to engage in a kind of mock necrophilia, writes Ginia Bellafonte.
McCain Camp Vows 'War' With NYT Over Lobbyist Story (Politico)
"It's not every night I stay up to read the National Enquirer," said Charlie Black, who was with other top McCain aides at the senator's Arlington, Va., headquarters to mount the counterattack. Black noted he had taken heat from some of his "conservative friends" after McCain won the Times's endorsement in January. "We're going to go to war with them now," Black said. Radar: Michael Isikoff of Newsweek and Michael Calderone of Politico were two of the reporters at rival publications who were chasing the Times story. Calderone was particularly well informed about the details of the Times investigation.
News Corp Discussions on Yahoo Continue (TechCrunch)
Michael Arrington: News Corp. has essentially planted four or five deal guys at Yahoo HQ, working directly with Yahoo business development to try to find a deal to combine MySpace and Yahoo that both sides can swallow. As far as we know the potential deal structure hasn't changed, and they are still hung up on how to make the merger work without getting Google involved to take on search marketing.
Kurt Andersen Now Officially a 'Visionary' (Portfolio)
Author, editor, columnist, radio talker: Kurt Andersen's worn a lot of hats. Now he's getting fitted for a new one: visionary. The Spy co-founder and Studio 360 host has accepted an invitation from the Art Center College of Design, a Los Angeles school, to serve as its "visionary in residence" during spring semester 2009. "It's embarrassing to say, although I should be flattered," says Andersen.
Broken Borders and Dover Sole: Lunch With Lou Dobbs (NYT)
Lawrence Downes: Among people whose immigration views I admire, Dobbs has a reputation as a hopeless blowhard. I did not dwell on that at lunch. I was his guest, and I had seen what happens if you try to skewer him with insult or accusation. Dobbs is unencumbered by self-doubt. The granite fortress of his certitude is smooth and featureless, and whatever boulders you hurl at it will end up on your head.
