News Media and Politics: An Uneasy Union (LAT)
Some of America's most prominent political journalists are, quite literally, wedded to the 2008 presidential race: Their spouses work for one of the candidates. Should the potential conflict of interest merely be disclosed to readers or viewers? Or should the journalists be shifted to new assignments to lessen the appearance their motives might be divided? Heading into the presidential election year, the answers to those questions have been markedly different for at least four journalists: Los Angeles Times' Ronald Brownstein; Portfolio's Matthew Cooper; Fortune's Nina Easton and NBC's Campbell Brown.
Washington Post to Put Ad on First Page of Sports Section (WaPo)
The Post is publishing an advertisement at the bottom of tomorrow's sports section, the first time in decades the newspaper has given over part of the front page of a daily news section to advertising. There were no plans to sell ads on the front page of the paper, managing editor Phillip Bennett said.
Satellite Radio Deal Could Face Technical Difficulties (WaPo)
Industry experts say both firms are straining their systems' transmission capacities even before they try to add each other's content. The capacity question is important because the two companies have promised that no existing XM or Sirius receiver will become obsolete. That means millions of receivers must be able to receive the merged company's enhanced content for years to come.
YouTube to Announce Awards for User Video (AP via MSNBC)
The video-sharing Web site announced today that it will hold the first YouTube Video Awards to recognize the best-user created videos of 2006. The awards will be handed out in seven categories: most creative, most inspirational, best series, best comedy, musician of the year, best commentary and "most adorable video ever."
Helen Thomas Reclaims Front-Row Seat at White House Press Briefings (Eat the Press)
Thomas was officially re-awarded her front row seat in the White House Briefing Room after it had been rudely snatched away last month, owing to the combination of fewer seats in the newly-refurbished briefing room (seven seats per rows for seven rows instead of six seats per row for eight rows) and the fact that both Fox and CNN had been agitating for a front-row seat.
