A Money Manager Battles New York Times (WSJ)
The Times is getting a crash course on how to handle persistent and critical shareholders, as it fights to preserve the complex share structure by which the Sulzberger family maintains control over the public company. James M. Kilts, a former Gillette Co. chairman and an accomplished deal maker, joined the Times board in 2005 and has taken an active role advising Arthur Sulzberger, according to people familiar with the matter. In particular, he has pushed the company to cut costs.
CNBC Eyes Animated Series (Hollywood Reporter)
CNBC is developing an animated series based on the comic strip "CEO Dad," which could become a half-hour series on the network in the fall. Sources said the network will likely air five one-minute shorts that will be cut from a pilot based on the cartoon written by Los Angeles executive recruiter Tom Stern. A half-hour series to air on CNBC could follow, though it's by no means assured. "CEO Dad" centers on Frank Pitt, chief executive of a Styrofoam peanut manufacturer in Pennsylvania, who tries to balance work life and home life with his wife, Chloe, 10-year-old son J.D., 7-year-old daughter Grace and dog Taylor. His family believes he's more focused on work than home life.
And Now, a Commercial Break That Doesn't Seem Like One (NYT)
ABC is considering changes in the decades-old way it interrupts programs for commercial breaks. The goal is to encourage viewers to stick around rather than reaching for the remote. "We want to bring the audiences right to the commercial so they don't feel they've gone into the commercial," said Michael Shaw, president for sales and marketing at the ABC Television Network unit of ABC.
Schwarzenegger: Rush Limbaugh Is 'Irrelevant' (LAT)
After repeatedly being asked about his conservative critics, including talk show host Rush Limbaugh, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dropped his diplomatic veneer Tuesday and declared their views irrelevant to his work in California. "All irrelevant. Rush Limbaugh is irrelevant. I am not his servant," the governor said on NBC's Today show. FBNY: Governator goes green.
Outrage!: Friedman Appalled Over LAT Guest Editor Pick (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: I am surprised that more journalists don't feel outraged by the news that Oscar-winning director Brian Grazer will be editing a section of the paper on March 25. Grazer probably does know a heck of a lot about journalistic practices and ethics from co-producing The Paper in 1994, but does that qualify a guy to do a Walter Mitty turn and act like Charles Foster Kane?
