NewAssignment.Net and Huffington Post Team Up To Cover 2008 Campaign (PressThink)
Jay Rosen: Instead of one well-placed reporter trailing John Edwards wherever he goes (which is one way of doing it) some 40 or 50 differently-placed people tracking different parts of the Edwards campaign, all with peculiar beats and personal blogs linked together by virtue of having a common editor and a page through which the best and most original stuff filters out to the greater readership of the Web, especially via the Huffington Post. Arianna Huffington: Wisdom of the crowd hits '08 campaign.
Violent Clash of 'Styles' Disrupts Times (Rush and Molloy)
A catfight at the New York Times Friday still has staffers in shock. The dustup between two female editors in the Styles department disrupted work on the Thursday and Sunday Styles sections as co-workers froze at the fracas. Fashion editor Anita LeClerc was the aggressor and her superior, deputy editor Mary Ann Giordano, the victim, sources say.
Has Britney Spears People-ized TMZ.com? (BusinessWeek)
Jon Fine: Anyone thinking that fast-growing site TMZ.com is strictly takedown evidently hasn't seen the valentines they're sending to the nation's best-known rehab doll. If the first "official" photo session of a rehabbed Ms. Spears appears on TMZ.com, we'll know we're truly onto something. But 'til then, please judge for yourself. DISCUSS THIS STORY: Is TMZ becoming People?
Viacom's Expensive YouTube Suit (Forbes)
The $1 billion lawsuit Viacom filed against Google this month could generate $350 million or more in legal fees, industry experts estimate. Will the two companies rack up those kind of bills? Probably not: Conventional wisdom holds that Google and Viacom are engaged in a very public game of chicken. But just by filing the suit, Viacom has already started running up an expensive tab.
As Cathy Seipp Lay Dying, Her Nemesis Took His Parting Shot on the Web (Fox News)
The 49-year-old newspaper columnist and conservative blogger was only hours away from losing her years-long fight with cancer. Just hours before her death, "Cathy Seipp" suddenly seemed to undo decades of hard work with an oddly written letter posted on the Web site, www.cathyseipp.com. Her supposed "very last blog entry" called her years of journalism a "shoddy," "despicable" and "irresponsible" career as a "fourth-rate hack." Her political stance? All a mistake. DISCUSS THIS STORY: Here.
Hachette's Kliger On Hatcheting Print (WSJ)
Jack Kliger: Looking at the ELLEgirl and Premiere categories, the consumers in the teen market and the movie market want fast information. We saw trend lines for both ELLEgirl.com and Premiere.com moving in very positive, healthy directions, and we didn't necessarily feel that the print versions, which were not trending in a reasonable timeline toward profitability, enhanced what the digital versions were providing.
Dispatches From the Blog Battle Zone (BusinessWeek)
Negative comments about public figures be they politicians, celebrities, or prominent business executives are nothing new. However, the anonymity of the Web, coupled with the recent explosion of online tools that enable anyone with an Internet connection to publish opinions, has made online public attacks and threats against individuals even on the periphery of public life more common.
