A Funnier-Than-Usual Journal Gets Snapped Up Early (NYT)
It seems someone at The Wall Street Journal really likes a biting new parody of the paper likes it enough, in fact, to leave at least one newsstand with no copies remaining for anyone else to buy. The tabloid-format satire, My Wall Street Journal, mostly sets out to skewer The Journal's new owner, the News Corporation, and its chairman, Rupert Murdoch.
He Wrote 200,000 Books (but Computers Did Some of the Work) (NYT)
Philip Parker has generated more than 200,000 books, as an advanced search on Amazon.com under his publishing company shows, making him, in his own words, "the most published author in the history of the planet." And he makes money doing it. But these are not conventional books, and it is perhaps more accurate to call Parker a compiler than an author.
New Face at Facebook Hopes to Map Out a Road to Growth (WSJ)
Two weeks into her job as Facebook's chief operating officer, the 38-year-old executive, second in command to 23-year-old CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is rolling out new management and operations procedures. Among these are guidelines for employee performance reviews, processes for identifying and recruiting new employees, and management-training programs.
Overby Had a Plan to Increase Circulation Build a New Newseum (WaPo)
Friday the reincarnated Newseum opened, and Charles Overby was so busy it took a while before he noticed the line of visitors snaking down Pennsylvania Avenue. By the end of the day, 10,854 people had come through the door, and Overby pronounced himself "ecstatic."
Former CNN Anchor Does the 'Possible' (AP)
Left with a personal crisis sadly familiar to many, former CNN anchor Daryn Kagan reinvented herself with a Web site devoted to telling inspirational stories. With a book that went on sale Tuesday, two TV documentaries and a planned show for broadcast, she's trying to build an empire. "I don't have a Web site," she says now. "I have a media company."
Katie Couric: The Story That Keeps on Giving (Marketwatch)
Jon Friedman: A melodrama of Shakespearian proportions is being played out in the broadcasting world, centering on the intrigue surrounding who else? Katie Couric, the $15 Million Broadcaster. If you believe everything you read, you can probably assume the Couric saga is complete with backstabbing, deceit, Watergate-worthy non-denial denials, betrayal and the high art of damage control.
