Ex-Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to Publish Memoirs (Reuters)
Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, architect of the unpopular Iraq war, will publish his memoirs and donate the proceeds to charity, Penguin Group said on Monday. The proceeds will be donated to a not-for-profit foundation he set up to fund global microfinance efforts, foster public service through educational grants and build links between America and central Asia.
Boston Herald Gets Duped by Fake News Story (Boston)
Amy Derjue: The Boston Herald got duped by satirist Andy Borowitz, who posted an entry on The Huffington Post and his own Web site that claimed Dick Cheney appeared on Meet the Press, and had challenged Hillary Clinton to a day of hunting. It's a brilliant piece of satire, with some great fake quotes. "We were bamboozled," Herald publisher Kevin Convey said of the incident.
Time for New Blood in Newspaper Boardrooms (Content Bridges)
Ken Doctor: With all the old faces leaving the newsrooms and executive suites of the newspapers, isn't it time to really shake up other boardrooms as well. Why wait for private equity people to buy their way in? It's time for new blood to percolate happily around the out-sized tables of endangered wood. And would be criminal to have board members under the age of 50?
Washingtonpost.com Tinkers With Links (Portfolio)
Look, but don't click. That's the idea behind a new hyperlink technology rolling out on parts of WashingtonPost.com Tuesday morning. Two of the paper's blogs, The Fix and Celebritology, will introduce links powered by a tech start-up called Apture. By rolling the cursor over a link, readers can see what's at the destination be it an article, photo, or video without clicking through.
The Atlantic to Rebrand for the Digital Age (Folio:)
In its push to become more modern, digital-friendly and finally profitable the 150-year-old Atlantic has hired an integrated marketing agency to handle its rebranding. "The overall effort is to make the Atlantic more contemporary," Justin Smith, Atlantic Media's president of consumer media says. "It's not an overhaul as much as a refinement."
Tom Brokaw Dumps the Knicks (Page Six)
Tom Brokaw is giving up the Knicks season tickets he's held for years, disgusted with his once favorite team's losing streak and lousy management. "As a season ticket holder for a long time, I won't renew because I don't like the attitude that that ownership has brought to the community," Brokaw told Jim Gray on XM Satellite Radio. "I just think that they have failed their obligation to the city."
