Bill O'Reilly Producer 'Stalks' Denver Post Columnist in Wild Oats Parking Lot (Westword)
O'Reilly put Joanne Ostrow in the "Ridiculous" spotlight, branding her "flat-out dishonest, and a far-left ideologue" after Ostrow criticized O'Reilly in a column. In the meantime, O'Reilly producer Porter Berry phoned to ask if Ostrow would debate her statements on the Factor; she declined, saying her prose spoke for itself. Then, on April 10, Berry, a cameraman and a sound technician ambushed Ostrow in the parking lot of a Wild Oats market. (Berry flew in for the task.) On April 11, O'Reilly aired this forced conversation on his nationally syndicated radio staple and the television Factor.
Auerbach Named EIC of Metro US (NYP)
Veteran newsman Jon Auerbach was named editor-in-chief of Metro US, which includes the freebie Metro New York as well as daily free papers in Boston and Philadelphia. He fills a post that has been vacant since Mark Moore was bounced seven months ago. Managing editor Maggie Samways had been filling in since Moore's exit.
Boycott Journalism (WSJ)
When BBC reporter Alan Johnston was kidnapped in Gaza and according to an unconfirmed statement by his apparent captors murdered in cold blood, one naturally expected Britain's National Union of Journalists to take a strong stand. Indeed it has. On behalf of its 35,000 members, the NUJ has declared a boycott of tomatoes, oranges, cucumbers and other products from Israel, believe it or not, while calling on Her Majesty's government to do the same.
Imus Revisited (Forbes)
James Brady: Don did a careless, callous, cruel and hurtful thing, on the air and heard by millions. He's not stupid and should have known better. Is he finished? Is this the end? If I had to guess today, someone out there is going to give him another shot, some brilliant iconoclast. Mel Karmizin of Sirius? Roger Ailes of Fox? WaPo: I was stunned to learn how many of the journalists I admire had been regular guests on Imus' program, writes David Broder.
