Can Couric Survive as Anchor? (Inky)
CBS executives deny it, but there's a growing feeling within the network that Katie Couric is an expensive, unfixable mistake. So unfixable that Couric the first woman to anchor a network nightly newscast solo may leave CBS Evening News, probably after the 2008 presidential elections, to assume another role at the network, CBS sources say. Online Presidential Debates Planned (AP via Time)
The 2008 presidential contenders may soon be slugging it out in cyberspace, with pioneering online-only debates being planned for early next fall, a new media partnership says. The political blog Huffington Post, online portal Yahoo and Slate magazine will host the debates one for Democratic candidates, one for Republicans sometime after Labor Day, with PBS host Charlie Rose serving as moderator, the sponsors planned to announce Monday.
Policing Web Video With 'Fingerprints' (WSJ)
NBC has been agitating for Google to move faster to put a fingerprinting system in place, contending in recent months that the Internet giant hasn't made battling piracy a priority. Now that Google is starting a test, the media company has for the moment tabled any plans to join Viacom in pursuing legal options. "We see progress," said NBC General Counsel Rick Cotton in an interview. CBS says it is also having "constructive conversations" with YouTube about fingerprinting.
Philadelphia Journalism's New Order (NYT)
Starting next week, the Philadelphia Inquirer will run a new column called PhillyInc., written by Inquirer reporters and editors, on the first page of its business section. The column will be sponsored by a local advertiser, Citizens Bank. At the Inquirer, everything even a joint venture with an advertiser that might have raised questions about editorial integrity is being rethought.

Washington Post Co. CEO Donald Graham: One tier or two, public companies and their boards are responsible for increasing the long-term value of their shareholders' investments. Has the New York Times Co.'s management done its job well or badly? Its believers can buy more shares; its critics can sell or recommend changes. But those proposed changes ought to be scrutinized as carefully as management's performance.
