How Murdoch Cheated WSJ Independence Pact (Portfolio/Mixed Media)
News Corp.'s claim that Brauchli "resigned" starts to look pretty vulnerable, legally speaking. "There are certainly questions about whether this resignation was voluntary or not," says Jane Kirtley, director of the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law at the University of Minnesota. "The reality is that if a job is completely redefined to the point in bears no resemblance to the one you were originally hired to do, I think a case can be made that this amounts to constructive dismissal."

"We do feel we are doing a good job on [costs]." McClatchy Chairman and CEO Gary Pruitt said in a conference call yesterday afternoon. "We feel we have no choice. Given revenue trends we have to reduce costs." With the rise in newsprint prices expected to hit later this year, Pruitt said the company has to look for "further efficiencies." McClatchy is on track, he noted to sustain double-digit run rates on expense declines.
Runner's World Editor Willey to Be Elected ASME President (WWD)
Next week, when members of the American Society of Magazine Editors vote over lunch to select their officers, Runner's World editor and ASME treasurer David Willey is expected to be elected president. That will be a surprise to those who assumed Elle editor-in-chief Roberta Myers, who has served as vice president since last year, would replace Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive.
China Ties US For Most Web Users at 221 Million People (AP)
China's fast-growing population of Internet users has soared to 221 million, tying the United States for the largest number of people online, according to government data reported Thursday. The figure, reported by the Xinhua News Agency, reflects China's explosive growth in Web use despite government efforts to block access to material considered subversive or pornographic.
Rupert Murdoch's Newspaper Addiction (Paid Content)
Lauren Rich Fine: If I were a NWS shareholder, I would be angry. The average NWS shareholder doesn't own it for its newspapers; in fact, they likely own it despite the newspapers. They own it for the promise of digital and other NWS businesses. Newsday wouldn't appear to further the digital interests, the area in which the WSJ competes online is crowded.
