NBC News Prez: 'Good Journalism Is Bad P.R.' (AP)
The head of NBC News said the decision to air images, writings and video of Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho was "good journalism" and the network showed restraint by paring down what would be made public. NBC News President Steve Capus, who appeared with NBC Nightly News anchorman Brian Williams on Tuesday's broadcast of the Oprah Winfrey Show, acknowledged images that "wallpapered" the media were uncomfortable to view.
Tribune Begins to Buy Back Shares (AP)
Media conglomerate Tribune Co. said Wednesday that it has begun the repurchase of up to $4.3 billion of common shares in an initial step toward going private. The nation's second-largest newspaper publisher is being acquired in an $8.2 billion deal by real estate tycoon Sam Zell.
A Host Dials Down, and Bush Speaks Up (NYT)
Alessandra Stanley: Charlie Rose is a talk show host known for long and rambling questions. President Bush is famous for his short, Texas-terse answers. On last night's show, the two men reversed roles. Mr. Bush spoke forcefully and at length about Iraq. Mr. Rose was succinct.
Finalists for 2007 EPpy Awards Announced (E&P)
Washingtonpost.com has earned five finalist nods in the 2007 EPpy Awards, which are sponsored by Editor & Publisher and MediaWeek magazines. The finalists were announced today. EPpy winners will be revealed at the Interactive Newspaper Conference and Trade Show in Miami on May 24.
A Plea For Book Coverage In Newspapers (Inside Higher Ed)
Scott McLemee: Over the past several years, the economics of daily newspapers have become much more complicated and many paper owners have felt that their profit margins weren't large enough. Coverage of books has been one of the easiest things to cut. Such cuts are usually explained as a matter of economic necessity the decisions framed in terms of meeting the perceived interests of the public. But the reduction or elimination of book coverage has occurred even in cities where readers clearly want and expect it.
