Maria Sharapova knows that face time with Vogue editrix Anna Wintour trumps hamming it up on the red carpet. Wintour agreed to meet with the tennis hottie in a private room before Sharapova's 21st birthday party Tuesday night at Tenjune. The tennis star hammed it up for Teen Vogue cameras, but Wintour quickly fled the scene.
Stricter Rules Loom for Media Owners (Baltimore Sun)
The Federal Communications Commission defied some members of Congress in 2007 by easing a ban on ownership of a newspaper and a broadcast station in the same city. Yesterday, the lawmakers took the first step toward getting even. The Senate Commerce Committee unanimously approved a rare "resolution of disapproval" to invalidate the FCC's new rules.

News Corp.'s bid to buy Newsday will face regulatory hurdles, but political attacks on the deal could be more of a long-term problem as News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch tries to seal the deal. Public-interest groups and lawmakers are signaling they are ready to fight the deal on grounds that it gives News Corp. too much media power.

It appears that Elle is the victim of a sticky prank. According to a post on environmental gossip site Ecorazzi, "Retraction" stickers were placed inside several copies of Elle's green issue on a story called "The Believers," an investigative report that examines the eco-extremist movement through the story of a teenage FBI informant.
