Steep Circulation Decline At NYT While WSJ Gains (E&P)
Print circulation continues on its steep downward slide, the Audit Bureau of Circulations revealed this morning in releasing the latest numbers for some of the country's largest dailies in the six-month period ending March 31, 2008. When a full analysis appears it is expected to find, according to sources, the biggest dip yet, about 3.5 percent daily and 4.5 percent for Sunday.
Satellite Is Sexy Again (BusinessWeek)
Satellites are sexy again. Many of the companies that ended up in Chapter 11 have re-emerged and are once again drawing investors' interest. In the past half-year, private equity firms including Harbinger Capital Partners and Silver Lake have poured billions of dollars into satellite companies.
M&A Sources: Breaking Up RBI For Sale 'Great Idea' (Folio:)
It's been two months since London-based Reed Elsevier announced its plans to divest its b-to-b arm, Reed Business Information, and rumors are understandably still swirling about who its potential suitors are, and when it may actually sell. The most recent rumor is that Reed may sell the U.S. division of RBI separate from the European group.
At Journal, The Words Not Spoken (NYT)
After getting kicked to the curb, Marcus Brauchli and Stuart Karle, who had spent their lives helping others speak truth to power, were unwilling to defend The Wall Street Journal's history of vigorous and unfettered pursuit of the truth. Each is under a nondisparagement clause as part of his negotiated agreement, so Journal reporters and editors watched the odd specter of a First Amendment lawyer and a lifelong journalist talking about everything except what was on everyone's mind.
Fox Executives Not Standing Pat; Researching Ways to Improve American Idol (B&C)
Ben Grossman: American Idol and the executives from its network don't live in a Fox hole they've seen the ratings. The numbers are down, but Fox execs aren't just standing around staring aimlessly off into space like Idol robo-contestant David Archuleta. I got my grubby little fingers on an online market research survey Fox put into play last week, and its execs are looking at every aspect of how to plug this ratings leak.
Gatecrasher Goodbye (NYDN)
Ben Widdicombe: Oh no! After four years (which is 28 in liver years) Gatecrasher has crashed its last gate for the Daily News. I hope you've had as much fun reading the column as I have had writing it, but today I am leaving to pursue my ambition of becoming the world's first plus-size hand supermodel. Wish me luck!
