James Frey, Nan Talese Claim Oprah Duped Them (Vanity Fair)
Was James Frey's A Million Little Pieces an ex-junkie's con job, part of a proud literary tradition, or just the standard hype of an increasingly embattled publishing industry? In his first U.S. interview since Oprah nailed him, in 2006, Frey tells his version of the story, including how his new novel, his family, and the late Norman Mailer helped him survive the resulting maelstrom, sober all the way.
Latinos Outraged Over CBS Report (Politico)
If Katie Couric didn't already have enough problems, she now has civil rights groups mostly Hispanic on her back. And for good reason. The CBS newscast that carries her name recently aired a one-sided and inaccurate report about illegal immigrant women who give birth to their children in the United States. The news story challenged the broader constitutional law of birthright citizenship.
Microsoft's Next Move on Yahoo is Imminent (WSJ)
Microsoft Corp. is expected to make its next move in the three-month-old takeover standoff with Yahoo Inc. as early as today, as the two sides have failed to reach any negotiated acquisition deal. One option Microsoft has weighed is nominating a proxy slate of directors to replace Yahoo's board, while waiting to put any acquisition offer directly to Yahoo shareholders, say people familiar with the matter.
Curse of the D.C. Swamp Creatures (NYO)
"It's not the best time in the world to be a White House correspondent," said Bill Plante on the sultry afternoon of Saturday, April 26. These nearly-over final four years of George W. Bush are Mr. Plante's third second-term presidency in his years as CBS White House correspondent. "I guess he could still drop a bomb somewhere... He's still important, but he ceases to be the center of attention."
Murdoch Faces Few Hurdles If He Buys Newsday (Newsday)
There is little the federal government can do to stop Rupert Murdoch from buying Newsday, despite some congressional opposition, objections from public-interest groups and a proposed deal that would violate even relaxed federal rules. Such a purchase could, however, endanger Murdoch's licenses for his two area television stations, WNYW and WWOR.
