Tom Wolfe: 'Idiots' on TV News (P6)
Televised news can't hold a candle to newspapers, according to Tom Wolfe. "As newspapers are declining rapidly... I would just point out, all news today comes from newspapers. All of it," the Bonfire of the Vanities author told Charlie Rose the other night. "Television has never initiated a successful story in its life. When they have a big story, it's always wrong."
Hachette Names New CEO (Portfolio)
Hachette Filipacchi Media, publisher of Elle, Car & Driver and 12 other titles, just announced that Jack Kliger is stepping down as CEO, effective Sept. 1, to become chairman. Replacing him as the chief executive will be Alain Lemarchand, currently directeur général Délégué of Lagardére Active. (Lagardére is Hachette's Paris-based parent company.)
NYT's Landman Being Considered for WaPo Editor (Politico)
Washington Post publisher Katharine Weymouth continues trying to find the right successor to executive editor Len Downie. Already, several prominent names surfaced over the past weeks, including ex-WSJ ME Marcus Brauchli, Newsweek's Jon Meacham, Post columnist David Ignatius, and Post ME Phil Bennett. Now there's a new candidate: New York Times deputy managing editor Jonathan Landman.
Microsoft Bets on Interactive Ads (B&C)
Software giant Microsoft is strengthening its presence in the cable-television industry by acquiring Navic Networks, a Waltham, Mass.-based firm that provides software to deliver addressable advertising and interactive applications to some 35 million digital set-tops. Terms of the deal for privately held Navic, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft, were not disclosed.
Russert Took Media Bias Seriously (WSJ)
Bernard Goldberg: What made Tim Russert different, and better, I think was his willingness to listen to and take seriously criticism about his own profession. He was willing, for example, to keep an open mind about a hot-button issue like media bias an issue that so many of his colleagues dismiss as the delusions of right-wing media haters.
Cablevision Systems Completes Sundance Acquisition (Multichannel News)
Rainbow Media, Cablevision Systems' programming subsidiary, Tuesday announced it has wrapped up its $496 million purchase of the Sundance Channel from a group of owners including NBC Universal, CBS and founder Robert Redford. The 12-year-old channel went on the market in February after neither NBCU (which owns 57 percent) nor CBS (37 percent) could buy out the other partners.
