Brangelina Baby Pics Bidding Tops $11M (NYDN)
Bidding for the first pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's new spawn, Knox and Vivienne, was hovering between $11 million and $12 million yesterday, said insiders. People and OK! "both wanted it at all costs," said a source. Even though People scored the snaps of the couple's last baby, Shiloh, one OK! staffer argued that owner Richard Desmond had a higher tolerance for spending.
AP Washington Bureau Chief to Rove in 2004: 'Keep Up the Fight' (TPM Muckraker)
Buried in the 50-page report on Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch released yesterday by the House Oversight Committee, is a quote from none other than the new head of the AP's Washington Bureau, Ron Fournier. In response to an email from Fournier, then a reporter, Karl Rove asked, "How does our country continue to produce men and women like this," to which Mr. Fournier replied, "The Lord creates men and women like this all over the world. But only the great and free countries allow them to flourish. Keep up the fight."
Dismissal of Suit Against Times Is Upheld (NYT)
A federal appeals court on Monday unanimously affirmed the dismissal of a suit against The New York Times by a former government scientist who had asserted that he was defamed by a series of columns about the deadly anthrax mailings of 2001. The three-judge panel said that a federal trial court judge had correctly granted the Times's motion to dismiss the suit brought by Steven J. Hatfill.
Late-Night Hosts Finding it Hard to Make Fun of Obama (NYT)
Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien and others have delivered a nightly stream of jokes about the Republican running for President each one a variant on the same theme: John McCain is old. But there has been little humor about Mr. Obama: about his age, his speaking ability, his intelligence, his family, his physique. And there has been almost none about his race.
Leno Hints that ABC is in His Future (Deadline Hollywood Daily)
Last night on NBC's The Tonight Show, Jay Leno was doing his Monday night "Headlines" segment when he held up a magazine cover with a picture of himself and a cutline that said "Host of The Tonight Show on ABC". When the few laughs died down, Leno looked into the camera and smirked, "It's like a headline from the future."
