ABC's Robin Roberts: 'I Have Breast Cancer' (ABC.com)
Robin Roberts: I never thought I'd be writing this ... I have breast cancer. It all started a few weeks ago. We had gotten the news that our dear colleague and friend Joel Siegel had passed away and we began preparing for our special tribute show for him. I did a piece about Joel's courageous battle with cancer, reporting on the way my friend had lived his life and been such a successful advocate for the importance of early cancer screenings. That very night when I went to bed, I did a self breast exam and found something that women everywhere fear: I found a lump.
FCC Passes on Full-Court Profanity Appeal (B&C)
The FCC has decided not to seek full court review of the Second Circuit Court of Appeal's ruling that its "fleeting profanity" findings against Fox were "arbitrary and capricious." The court in June ruled that the commission had not justified its decision to find fleeting expletives in two Fox music awards show broadcasts indecent, a reversal of long-standing policy.
Who's Responsible for the Deaths of the Journalists Covering That Car Chase in Phoenix? (Slate)
If you're in a car chase with the cops and someone happens to die, are you liable for murder? Yes, in some cases. It all depends on why you're running and where you are. In most states, you can be convicted of first-degree murder, even if you didn't intend for someone to die. Does it matter that the reporters in the fatal helicopter crash presumably put themselves in harm's way? Probably.
Why Literary Blogging Won't Save Our Literary Culture (Boston Globe)
Sven Birkerts: This question of blogs versus print in literary reviews is intricately bound up with broader perceived transformations in how our culture carries on its artistic and intellectual business. As exciting as the blogosphere is as a supplement, as a place of provocation and response, it is too fluid in its nature ever to focus our widely diverging cultural energies.
Hollywood Pros to Launch Online Video Site (AP via SFGate.com)
When it launches on Tuesday, Web site My Damn Channel will become the latest attempt by Hollywood professionals to cash in on the huge popularity of online video. It will provide creative freedom seldom offered by traditional media companies and will syndicate its videos on other Internet sites and collect revenue from advertising. My Damn Channel has already signed a distribution deal with YouTube.
