CNN_MartinSavidge.jpgNBC News Correspondent Savidge Named Anchor of New Public Television Newscast (NYT)
Correspondent Martin Savidge is leaving NBC News for public television, where he is to become the anchor of a new weeknight broadcast that will focus on international news. Worldfocus, with a start-up budget that station employees said is about $8 million, will attempt to fill what Savidge called a void in television news.

A Small Empire Built on Cuddly and Fuzzy Branches Out From the Web (NYT)
The birth of Cute Overload was almost purely accidental. Meg Frost, a 36-year-old design manager at Apple, started the site three years ago to test Web software. Within months, it became an online institution. Given all the nastiness on the Internet, what better antidote is there than looking at pictures of tiny ducklings waddling in a line or kittens splayed on their backs, paw pads in the air?

Seventeen to Launch Branded Workout Videos (Folio:)
Hearst Magazines Digital Media has partnered with video and on-demand television network ExerciseTV to produce the Seventeen Trainer, a series of Seventeen magazine-branded exercise videos for teenage girls. Hearst hopes the partnership will help inspire its readers to make fitness more of a regular part of their daily lives.

Jack C. Landau, Who Fought for Rights of News Reporters, Is Dead at 74 (NYT)
Jack C. Landau, who used his education as a lawyer in a passionate fight for the legal rights of news reporters at a time when he and others believed they were gravely threatened, died Aug. 9. Landau, who had worked as a reporter before joining the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, called himself a "First Amendment guerrilla" and said the committee was designed to operate like the reporters it represented.

NBC's Zippy Vignettes Trounce Treacly Tales About Athletes (WaPo)
Paul Farhi: For these Olympics, NBC is getting up close but not quite so personal in the canned profiles and features that appear each night during the Games. Where once the heavily produced "up-close-and-personal" segments emphasized athletes' hardships and struggles -- impoverished upbringings, triumph over injuries, midnight political defections -- NBC's overall approach this time around is lighter, tighter and slighter.

Self's Dana Points Named Parents EIC (Mediaweek)
Meredith Corp. has tapped Dana Points, executive editor at Conde Nast's Self, to fill its top editor slot at Parents. Points will fill the role previously held by Sally Lee, who was promoted in early July to senior vp and New York editorial director as well as editor of Ladies' Home Journal, replacing Diane Salvatore.
