Hachette Book Group Sales Drop 4%, Digital Up 20% (GalleyCat)
The Hachette Book Group reported that its sales dropped four percent during the first half of 2012 in a financial earnings statement released August 30th. Meanwhile, Hachette's digital sales increased 20 percent in the first half of 2012, as compared with the first half of 2011.
Boston Globe Won't Identify Author of Plagiarized Editorial (Poynter)
The Boston Globe is unwilling to identify the author of a recent unsigned editorial that plagiarized from a story by NPR affiliate WBUR. The paper recently placed an editor's note on the editorial that said it "contained some similarities in phrasing and structure to an opinion piece by Todd Domke on WBUR.org."
Chinese Dissident, Convicted On Evidence from Yahoo, Freed From Prison After 10 Years (The New York Observer)
Way back in 2002, a Chinese political dissident named Wang Xiaoning was arrested for publishing pro-democracy materials using his Yahoo account. When the Chinese government went to build a case against Mr. Wang, Yahoo rolled over like a trained dog, coughing up Mr. Wang's records, which China then used to convict him of "subversion." But Mr. Wang has finally been freed.
