facebook.jpgFacebook Backers Create $10 Million Fund for Start-Ups (Reuters)
Facebook Inc. said on Monday its backers have created an unusual $10 million fund to dole out grants to start-ups with ideas for innovative Facebook applications. Facebook is working with its backers to create a way for people with new ideas to receive an initial funding grant of $25,000 to $250,000 that does not require the entrepreneur to give up any equity in the business they create.

No Editor's Letter in 3rd Edition of Portfolio (WWD)
The third issue of Portfolio will arrive on newsstands later this week with one thing missing — an editor's letter from Joanne Lipman. Though Lipman penned letters in the first two issues of the Condé Nast business title, she's opted not to include one for the foreseeable future. "The first two letters were to introduce the magazine," said a Portfolio spokeswoman. "For now, there will not be an editor's letter."

For 50th Anniversary, GQ Salutes 'Stylish Icons' (MIN)
Before GQ launched in 1957 (then as the Apparel Arts supplement to Esquire), the typical man dressed, a la the 1956 Gregory Peck movie, in that all-conforming gray flannel suit. GQ was the catalyst to the men's-fashion revolution, and editor-in-chief Jim Nelson says that in the October commemorative, "we chose 50 men who epitomized style and change."

Al Qaeda Threatens Swedish Newspaper Over Mohammed Caricature (E&P)
A Swedish newspaper is under death threats from Islamic extremists after publishing a drawing of the Prophet Mohammed. Al Qaeda in Iraq is offering a bounty for the murders of artist Lars Vilke and Ulf Johansson, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Nerikes Allehanda — which published a cartoon depicting the founder of Islam as a dog.

Uri Geller's YouTube Takedown (LAT)
Uri Geller got rich in the 1970s by insisting that his supernatural abilities were real, so a number of magicians and skeptics back then mounted a campaign to discredit the performer, demonstrating that his mental feats were nothing more than trickery. These old clips have recently begun appearing on YouTube and other video-sharing Web sites. This has gotten the alleged psychic all bent out of shape.
