34476-525-350.jpgBig in Japan: Novelists Find a New Medium (WSJ)
When Satomi Nakamura uses her cellphone, she has to be extra careful to take frequent breaks. The 22-year-old homemaker has recently finished writing a 200-page novel titled To Love You Again entirely on her tiny cellphone screen, using her right thumb to tap the keys and her pinkie to hold the phone steady. She got so carried away last month that she broke a blood vessel on her right little finger.

NY Times Creates More Bestsellers (LAT)
For Sam Tanenhaus, the Book Review's editor, creating the new trade fiction list "gives us the chance to recognize the category of quality fiction, of literary fiction. It also allows us to create a closer connection between the books we review and what readers might find on the bestseller list in any particular week. We can give a boost to authors who might not normally make the list, but now suddenly they'll be appearing on it."

WSJ Girds Itself for Murdoch (NYO)
It's still nearly two months until News Corp. officially closes on Dow Jones, The Wall Street Journal's parent. But there's growing evidence that at The Journal the Rupert Murdoch era has already begun. It's in The Journal's Washington operation where Murdoch's presence, perhaps indirectly, appears to be having its most significant effect.

Portfolio's David Carey: 'Stay Outside Your Comfort Zone' (Folio:)
David Carey, group publisher and publishing director of Condé Nast Portfolio/Business Media thinks that the magazine industry is currently outside of its comfort zone, and that's not a bad thing. "The industry is at an inflection point," Carey said. "We're watching the newspaper industry write its own obituary. We must avoid that for magazines."

Mark Burnett Preps NBC Quiz Show (Variety)
Reality vet Mark Burnett is turning into the gameshow guru, setting up the new quiz show My Dad Is Better than Your Dad at NBC. Burnett is teaming with Reveille (The Biggest Loser) on the project, which has been given an eight-episode midseason order by the Peacock. The premise of the game has fathers and their families facing off against other families in a series of stunt-driven challenges.

Creationist vs. Atheist YouTube War Marks New Breed of Copyright Claim (Wired)
A dispute between an atheist group and a creationist group over some postings on YouTube has critics of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act crying foul. They say it's a new and inappropriate use of DMCA, which is becoming a frequent weapon in nasty political and cultural battles.

Candidates Stick to Traditional Media (AdWeek)
Political candidates from both parties are demonstrating a stubborn devotion to traditional media, along with a cautious streak that is holding them back from embracing the Web as an outlet for political ad dollars, according to a group of panelists. Despite Americans' rapidly changing media habits, the panelists predicted that most spending will remain on TV and other tried and true outlets.
