James Murdoch on Satellite TV, His Google Deal, and What 'Mogul' Means (Wired)
Four years ago, James Murdoch, second son of you-know-who, took over as executive director of British Sky Broadcasting better known as Sky in the UK, where nearly one in three households subscribes to its flagship satellite TV service. Over the past year, Murdoch, 34, has led the company in an $800 million bid to complement Sky's high-flying television circus with a screaming-fast DSL broadband network.
New York Times Quarterly Profits and Revenue Rise (Reuters)
The New York Times Co. reported higher profit and revenue on Tuesday because of a rise in national advertising and circulation revenue, a contrast to a downbeat earnings season for U.S. newspaper publishers. Third-quarter net income rose 6.7 percent to $13.44 million from $12.6 million in the third quarter a year ago. Earnings per share were flat at 9 cents.
The Billion-Dollar Cost of Circulation-Based Pricing (MIN)
Rebecca McPheters: Our current circulation-based pricing system has both reduced advertising revenues and increased circulation costs. It has put print into a dangerous downward spiral as consumers increasingly expect to receive media content for free and yet magazines' advertising pricing is predicated on a paid circulation model.
News Magnate Baits Beijing by Pairing Politics and Sex (WSJ)
Jimmy Lai, long a combative agitator for press and political freedoms in China, has remade Hong Kong's media landscape by pairing two unlikely subjects democracy and sex. His Next Media Inc. publications frequently provoke Beijing and have stoked antigovernment rallies in Hong Kong, in political reports often interspersed with racy photos or consumer reviews of local strip clubs and saunas.
CBS Defends Inaction on Indecency Complaint (B&C)
CBS said it didn't take any remedial action after the Federal Communications Commission found drama Without a Trace indecent back in 2006, saying it didn't think it had to. The network was responding to questions posed by the FCC in June after the Parents Television Council in August 2006 challenged the license of CBS' KUTV(TV) Salt Lake City over the episode and that lack of action.
Guardian Rolls Out U.S. Web Site (Guardian)
The Guardian today launched its U.S. Web site with an exclusive interview with presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The site, Guardianamerica.com, has been designed for the Guardian's growing U.S. audience, which now accounts for nearly a third of Guardian Unlimited's readership.
